Storming St. Nazaire: The Dock Busting Raid of 1942, by James Dorrian

The St. Nazaire raid has not been covered in the detail warranted by its role in the evolution of special warfare tactics. James Dorrian has drawn on interviews with over 100 survivors, both British and German, to present this remarkable account. All aspects of the engagement are covered, including the final ironic incident that resulted in more German casualties than the main battle itself.

About the Author
While we might live in a world whose advances in military technology seem ever more to encroach upon the realm of science fiction, my own interest remains firmly directed towards conflict's human dimension. Having been born into the bleakness and hardship of a post-WW11 United Kingdom missing so many thousands of husbands, brothers, uncles and sons, I am particularly curious about the social, physical and intellectual consequences of the involuntary transformation, in wartime, of a family-oriented civilian population into combatants whose actions and very existence become, at a stroke, the property of the state. With regard to Operation CHARIOT, the Raid on Saint-Nazaire, I have, by delving deep within the nuts and bolts of one specific military event, sought to illustrate the unconscionable waste of energy, gift and youth, that is the inevitable consequence of our inability to live with one another in peace. Thanks to CHARIOT alone, Britain lost some of her very brightest and very best young men - a loss from which can be extrapolated the overwhelming folly of war in general as a solution to conflict. Surely our societies are not so overburdened with talent that we can afford to squander our most precious resource in enterprises whose only certain products are death and destruction. On a more personal note, I am an Irish Canadian, currently resident in the UK. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1946, I graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, before marrying my wife, and best friend, Sandie, in 1968. Having always been interested in aviation, we moved to England where I worked for several years in the aircraft industry, initially at the old Vickers works at Brooklands and ultimately on the Concorde supersonic transport project at RAF Fairford - a WW11 American air base. In 1974 we moved to Canada - to Alberta in the first instance, then to Victoria, British Columbia (surely one of the most beautiful yet least known cities in the world). While working in Victoria as an illustrator, I started to write a novel the research for which led me to CHARIOT and a decade and a half of research during which I was privileged to meet, and interview at length, most of the then surviving 'Charioteers'. Born in Northern Ireland in 1946, James Dorrian, BA, started his career with the Concorde Flight Test Centre. He emigrated to Canada in 1974 and established himself in Victoria, British Columbia, as a successful graphic designer. He returned to England in 1990 in order to pursue his work as a military historian. He also works as an artist painting vintage cars. He lives near Crewe.

Well-written, detailed, and, where necessary, critical.
By A Customer
Author Dorrian tells the story of the raid to destroy the docks at St. Nazaire so as to deny a berth to the German battleship TIRPITZ. He describes the strategic situation, outlines the plan, and gives some background on the primary individuals involved before getting into a highly-detailed account of the raid itself. He gives full credit to the crews of the British motor torpedo boats who found themselves in a harrowing situation without having volunteered for it, unlike the commandoes they were supporting. Dorrian does not hesitate to criticize the lack of support given to the raiding force by the Admiralty and the RAF. He also shows how the local French suffered as a result of the German response to the raid, side effects that are often overlooked in glowing accounts of World War Two special operations. Ultimately, the book shows how a well-trained, highly-motivated military unit can achieve remarkable success despite great difficulties. Highly recommended to anyone interested in special operations or coastal defense.

Detailed and gripping.
By A Customer
A well-researched and -written book on the British commando attack on the docks in St. Nazaire, France, in March of 1942. Dorrian points out the risky nature of the raid, the limited support given to the raiding force by the Admiralty and the Royal Air Force, and the incredible courage and persistance of the commandos and sailors assigned to the mission. Dorrian also brings the French residents into the story, and shows how the German occupiers took out their revenge on them. Unlike many current military history titles, the maps are useful! The two biggest drawbacks : as this title was originally published in Great Britain, the author does not explain his use of certain British military terms (e.g. "O group", "pongo") and practically no research was done from the German side. Nonetheless, highly recommended to those interested in the Second World War, special operations, or naval history.

An account of one of the most audacious raids from WW2.
By Ned Middleton
After the Bismarck was sunk in May 1941, the Tirpitz posed the greatest threat to Allied shipping in the Atlantic by any surface vessel. In order to pose such a menace, however, like the Bismarck, first she had to get there. Both sides were aware of how the Bismarck’s attempt had been a close run thing. Had her steering gear not been jammed by a fortunate torpedo strike - just as the great ship was executing an emergency turn, she would easily have made it to safety.

Whilst stopping the Tirpitz was, therefore a high priority for the British, the ship was also proving to be most elusive. Then came a plan with a very different approach altogether. The Tirpitz was a massive 45,000 tonnes and, in those days, there were not very many docks able to take such a large vessel. If ever she did break out, she would need to have a safe refuge somewhere for those eventual repairs and engine overhauls that are an essential part of running any big ship. The only suitable dockyard outside Germany was at Saint Nazaire.

In a daring raid in which no fewer than 5 VC’s were won, this is the story of how one of HM Ships was disguised to look like a German Destroyer in order to get close to the gates at the entrance to Saint Nazaire harbour - the very gates through which any big ship would have to pass. The plan was simple enough; A large compartment in the bows of the ship were packed with high explosives and then sealed shut. With the ship thus transformed into a time-bomb, she was driven at full speed into those gates where she became firmly wedged. This was followed by fierce fighting as the British tried to withdraw their now stranded crew and Commando troops from the harbour.

Later, when quite had finally descended on the town, the Germans inspected the ship - completely bemused by what appeared to be a futile attempt to wreck their harbour by simply ramming the gates. But, somewhere in a sealed compartment a clock was still ticking…..

The Press Release issued with this book describes it as “A graphic and dramatic description backed by excellent photographs.” I could not have put it better.

Grace: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine, by Max Lucado

Grace.

We talk as though we understand the term. The bank gives us agraceperiod. The seedy politician falls fromgrace. Musicians speak of agracenote. We describe an actress asgracious, a dancer asgraceful. We use the word for hospitals, baby girls, kings, and premeal prayers. We talk as though we know whatgracemeans.

But bestselling author Max Lucado says we’ve settled for a wimpy grace, a goldfish grace that sits in a bowl on the shelf and never causes trouble or demands a response.

Now available as a trade paperback, Lucado's bestselling book reminds readers that there’s more to grace than we’ve ever imagined. In this cornerstone message of Lucado's ministry, he challenges readers to not only receive grace but also to be changed by grace. Shaped by grace. Strengthened by grace. Emboldened by grace. Softened by grace. Snatched by the nape of their neck and shaken to their senses by grace.

Classic Lucado touching on a Crucial Topic
By M. Hodge
In the Christian book industry, Max Lucado has been a common name on a pretty regular basis when it comes to new releases. Apparently he is not slowing down in writing more and more great books. In keeping with his library of already released works, he has just released his newest book entitled simply "Grace".

As I picked up this book today (being familiar with other writings by Max Lucado) I expected smooth lines, well-crafted stories, and a poetic flow. I expected bite-sized chapters and devotional thoughts. But what I did not expect was to be emotionally stirred and wrapped up in this book! I guess you could say that I set out to read this with more of an academic mindset and yet this one cuts to the heart!

In chapter after chapter, you are going to forget what those plans were that had been at the top of your day's list. Instead, you'll probably finding yourself saying, "Just one more chapter". That's what I did...and I just finished the book! If we are supposed to be captivated by this idea of grace, Lucado has done a great job in conveying that to his audience. In my opinion, I believe Lucado did a much better job in this book of weaving illustrations and creative recreations of biblical events without going overboard as I sometime believe he has done in other works.

Reading through the book, as you make it to chapter 8, you will be cheering alongside Max Lucado as he defines grace triumphantly in these words, "Grace is simply another word for God's tumbling, rumbling reservoir of strength and protection. It comes at us not occasionally or miserly but constantly and aggressively, wave upon wave" (p. 99). As you begin chapter 9, you'll probably find yourself holding back your emotions as I did (I won't spoil the story) as Max once again skillfully weaves a story of the grace of God through, of all things, a wedding dress. I'm sure it was dust in my eyes anyway, right?

In chapter 10, you'll find hope in the fact that God's grace extends to you an adoption invitation! You'll take a step further in understanding grace as you grasp this idea that God chose us even though He knew our entire story! He didn't buy the lemon car with all of the surprises down the road. Instead, Lucado points out that God offers us salvation even while we are still sinners (Rom. 5:8). Lucado warms our hearts as he reminds us that we are adopted.

Well I won't walk through the whole book for you. That kind of steals the fun out of reading it. Instead, let me encourage to go and get this one. While you might wait a month and see if it goes on sale at your local retailer, it would still be worth it at full price! This one is going to lift your heart and your smile!

Note: I was also able to pick up the companion study guide and DVD at a local bookstore. For those interested in that, the DVD is simply Max retelling the chapters. So you might want to skip purchasing the DVD and simply read it yourself and then work through the companion study guide.

Lucado's latest is a must read for everyone.
By ChristianDroid
Grace, what appears to be a simple 5 letter word is not that simple after all. We all think we know what it means, after all we certainly have heard about it in church, sung about it from the hymnal, even named some of our children after it. But do we really know what grace is. Do we really appreciate what grace does? Do we understand that grace is an unending, all encompassing gift from God? That is the challenge that Max Lucado takes on in his latest book, "Grace: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine."

Lucado starts his explanation of grace by stating:

"Grace is everything Jesus. Grace lives because he does, works because he works, and matters because he matters. He placed a term limit on sin and danced a victory jig in a graveyard. To be saved by grace is to be saved by him - not by an idea, doctrine, creed, or church membership, but by Jesus himself, who will sweep into heaven anyone who so much as gives him the nod.

Not in response to a finger snap, religious chant, or a secret handshake. Grace won't be stage-managed. I have no tips on how to get grace. Truth is, we don't get grace. But it sure can get us. Grace hugged the stink out of the prodigal and scared the hate out of Paul and pledges to do the same in us."

Throughout his book, Lucado mixes his descriptions and explanations of grace with stories of grace from the Bible and stories of grace in our lives today. We learn about grace through Boaz, the Turkey Lady, merit badges, a flight of doctors, a bridal shop owner, some dirty feet, and even a fifth grade Christmas party.

With these real life stories and events from the Bible that we all know so well, Lucado manages to stir emotion in his readers and allows us to understand how God has blessed and changed our lives with His grace. Earlier tonight I was discussing this book with my wife (who has also read the book) and I remarked that the neighbors would have thought me crazy as I rode the lawn mower, cutting the grass, with tears flowing down my cheeks. I was listening to the audio version of Grace as I worked in the yard. She commented to me that there were several times that she put the book down while sitting at the hospice house with her mother in order to not to get too teary eyed in front of her.

I have written many book reviews, both print and audio, over the past year. I have read many more books than I have actually reviewed, but I have not read a book that has impacted my life like Lucado's book has in a very long time. This book has stirred up such great emotion and challenged my thinking to the point that I have re-started this review tonight for the fifth time. It is not a hard book to read, nor is it a hard book to review. But it was such a significant book to me that I am having a hard time writing down the emotions that this book has stirred.

This book will touch your heart! That is the highest recommendation that I can give. It is a must read for everyone. You will notice that I usually say "this book is a good read for those who ..." Not this time. This book should be read by all. There is something in this book that will reach out and slap you across the face to get your attention. There is a story here just waiting to touch your heart and speak to you.

If you have always been curious about God's grace and what it means, read this book. If you have received God's grace and wondered how you managed to get so lucky, read this book. If you have ever wondered when God would realize who you really are and then the gig would be up, read this book. If you have ever wished you could check your grace account to see what your balance was before you were overdrawn, read this book.

I would give this book 5 of 5 stars and would recommend it to my friends and family to read. "Grace, More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine by Max Lucado is published by Thomas Nelson Inc. and is available in your favorite bookstore or online. The book is also available in audio form from most audio booksellers.

I would also like to note that in addition to the hardcopy of the book, I was also given the opportunity to review the unabridged audio book as well. The audio book is well produced and is narrated by Wayne Shepherd. The narrator has a great soothing quality about his voice that lends itself well to this book. It was easy to understand and I really enjoyed listening to the audio book as I worked about the house this weekend.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Grace.
We talk as though we understand the term. The bank gives us a grace period. The seedy politician falls from grace. Musicians speak of a grace note. We describe an actress as gracious, a dancer as graceful. We use the word for hospitals, baby girls, kings, and premeal prayers. We talk as though we know what grace means.
But do we really understand it? Have we settled for wimpy grace? It politely occupies a phrase in a hymn, fits nicely on a church sign. Never causes trouble or demands a response. When asked, "Do you believe in grace?" who could say no?
Max Lucado asks a deeper question: Have you been changed by grace? Shaped by grace? Strengthened by grace? Emboldened by grace? Softened by grace? Snatched by the nape of your neck and shaken to your senses by grace?
God's grace has a drenching about it. A wildness about it. A white-water, riptide, turn-you-upside-downness about it. Grace comes after you. It rewires you. From insecure to God secure. From regret riddled to better-because-of-it. From afraid to die to ready to fly.
Grace is the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off.
Let's make certain grace gets you.

Surrendering to Yourself, by Iris Krasnow

Best-selling author Iris Krasnow presents a powerful, exhilarating book about living from truth, about uncovering who you are, beyond marriage, children, and career. With passionate narrative and insightful interviews, Krasnow helps readers muster up the courage to discard old selves that are false, and to live their dreams. She pushes people to sever unhealthy relationships, to resurrect childhood hobbies, to consider a new career, and to face their own mortality. Krasnow stresses that Surrendering to Yourself is not a selsh pursuit, that developing clarity and strength from within means opening up to the world and to love. 'My goal is for midlifers to think life-lifts, not facelifts; for people with crevices in their faces to realize that Botox cannot x their souls,' writes Krasnow. 'It is only when we plug into the passion of our souls can we find happiness.'

Amazon.com Review
Iris Krasnow is back with her third tribute to the art of personal commitment, Surrendering to Yourself, a book that focuses on the importance of making life choices that lead to greater fulfillment. Those familiar with Krasnow's work will by now understand that her concept of "surrender" is slightly different than the norm; what she urges repeatedly with this book is for people to return to the activities that have brought them the most joy in the past. Previous titles (Surrendering to Motherhood and Surrendering to Marriage) were aimed specifically at women, and while this is written from the same perspective, it is broader in scope, with a central message that appeals equally to both genders. Inspirational interviews range from a CEOs with a passion for flying to the Yom Kippur sermon of Krasnow's rabbi, and while the topic at hand is often the author's personal search, it is no less meaningful to those who have not been stay-at-home moms. Gently different from more directly instructional manuals, Krasnow reminds us that, "However compelling these texts are and insightful the scribes are, in the end it is you, and it is I, who must figure out things for ourselves—our values, aspirations, the meaning of integrity". She's not about to provide a precise list leading to these discoveries—instead, she'll inspire you to get started on your own list. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
The third in journalist Krasnow's series, following Surrendering to Marriage and Surrendering to Motherhood, examines the need for women to have their own identity, apart from their roles as wife and mother. Using her own experiences as well as those of women she interviewed for the book, Krasnow believes that women will be happier and more fulfilled when they are in touch with their own identity. Krasnow readily admits that she loves being a parent and dreads the day her children become independent and no longer rely on her on a daily basis, but she also believes that "we can't allow our power to be gotten from the adoration of someone else-real power stems from the beams in our soul, a soul we own and no one else gets to claim." Krasnow examines several important issues for women-work vs. family responsibilities; relationships with elderly parents; time to oneself; etc. Her writing is appealing; the transitions between the anecdotes from other people and her own experiences are seamless. It is hard to dispute her thesis-that women need to pursue work or hobbies or something that is their own-but Krasnow is sometimes so optimistic that readers may be put off. As a freelance journalist and part-time writing instructor, Krasnow was able to move out of the city and raise her kids in a small community. Not all readers will have these options. Still, her message is likely to hit home with many overstressed and overworked women.

Disappointing
By A Customer
I enjoyed Krasnow's first book, "Surrendering to Motherhood," but can't say this one is worth reading. It goes on and on about....nothing.
Here are some of the things that make Krasnow happy and help her to rediscover who she is: Working out with her trainer, getting away to the beach without her husband or kids, drinking coffee in her peaceful riverfront kitchen and feeling sorry for the poor souls who have to fight traffic to get to work at dawn, going away to an expensive sleepaway camp with her sons, and driving her shiny, sporty Ford Escape that reminds of her being young, carefree and childfree (she uses an additional car to tote the boys around town).
For those of us without the luxury of time, a third personal car, a personal trainer, a rich husband, etc, it will be a little more difficult to re-discover our souls. We're too busy paying bills, working, trying to find the time to spend with our children, friends and husbands.

Amazing book
By The Man in the Hathaway Shirt
I am awestruck...not because the book is terrific but because some people have figured out (or found agents who've figured out) how to write books about incredibly obvious things -- and make a handsome living at it. Furthermore, I love it when rich people tell me to put my feet up and savor the "good life," a life they probably wouldn't be able to savor themselves if they didn't get handsome checks for writing dreck like this. I haven't learned this much from a book since Suze Orman told me to look behind the sofa cushions for spare change.

Surrender to yourself and live your best life
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book, particularly the real-life examples of people who found themselves when they stopped trying to get approval from others. This book is worthwhile for anyone who is off purpose and is ready to find themselves. ... You deserve to live your best life!

MILLER'S LAW. The quality of food in restaurants is in inverse proportion to the number of signed celebrity photographs on the wall.

WALPOLE'S LAW. Every man has his price.

Unwritten Laws is a wonderfully entertaining treasury of more than five hundred rules, strategies, and ironical insights, with many amendments and corollaries, all associated with particular individuals.
Organized alphabetically, from Lady Astor ("All women marry beneath them.") to Zeno ("The goal of life is living in agreement with nature."), from Woody Allen ("Eighty percent of success is showing up.") to Oscar Wilde ("There are two tragedies in life. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it."), Unwritten Laws contains a generous sampling of the collective wisdom of humankind.
Hugh Rawson not only gives sources and dates for the law's, but annotates them with fascinating details. Wonderful title for training professionals!
By Kelvin Y C Fung
I got a copy of this book from a local book store. What impresses me is Hugh Rawson's ability to locate the source of the "law". Reading this book is both easy and inspirational. As a management trainer, I found this book a great tool for my own REFLECTION:
Do I have beliefs that is questionable? Have I investigated all aspects of the problem? Am I afraid of making mistake and looking stupid?
These are the reflections I've come across while reading it at the bookstore (before I made the purchase, I've spent more than an hour reading it).
While developing management training course, I often come across situations when I want to include something inspirational in the course manual. If this looks familiar to you, Rawson's book is for you. It literally has everything you need to know about "unwritten laws" from the infamous Murphy's Law to those of the great ancient Chinese thinkers.
Get yourself a copy! Kelvin's Law: "You only miss those thing you've haven't done at the right time!"

The Dice Are Hidden
By thomas kowalski
A wonderfully-crafted and edited collection of unwritten maxims -- many of which I have often improperly quoted -- Hugh Rawson's volume clears up many misconceptions and offers insightful historical anecdotes to amplify many of the "laws" than most of us live by (without acknowledging them).
Perhaps the most metaphysical of all is "Haldane's Observation;" that God doesn't play with dice (echoed in Einstein's theory that all of the universe's movements/activities are ultimately understandable). Rawson cleverly adds Stephen Hawking's contradictory observation that God not only shoots dice, but that they often land where man can't find them.
Totally enjoyable and entertaining, can be read straight through or left on the shelf as a "reference book," to be taken down as the occasion merits.

A Tale for the Time Being: A Novel, by Ruth Ozeki

A brilliant, unforgettable novel from bestselling author Ruth Ozeki—shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award

“A time being is someone who lives in time, and that means you, and me, and every one of us who is, or was, or ever will be.”

In Tokyo, sixteen-year-old Nao has decided there’s only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates’ bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who’s lived more than a century. A diary is Nao’s only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox—possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami. As the mystery of its contents unfolds, Ruth is pulled into the past, into Nao’s drama and her unknown fate, and forward into her own future.

Full of Ozeki’s signature humor and deeply engaged with the relationship between writer and reader, past and present, fact and fiction, quantum physics, history, and myth, A Tale for the Time Being is a brilliantly inventive, beguiling story of our shared humanity and the search for home.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Ozeki has shown herself, in the novels My Year of Meats (1998) and All over Creation (2003), to be a careful, considerate writer who obviously insists on writing what she wants to write and in the fashion she prefers. That special care and concern are also detectable in her latest novel, an intriguing, even beautiful narrative remarkable for its unusual but attentively structured plot. Ruth—the character Ruth—is a writer living in a remote corner of the Pacific coast of British Columbia who is currently thwarted by writer’s block as she attempts to compose a memoir. One day she finds a collection of materials contained in a lunchbox that has washed up on the beach. As if she has unleashed a magical mist, the items she finds inside, namely a journal and a collection of letters, envelop her in the details—the dramas—of someone else’s life. The life she has stumbled into is that of a Japanese teenager, who, believing suicide is the only relief for her teenage angst, nevertheless is determined, before she commits that final act, to write down the story of her great-grandmother, a Buddhist nun. We go from one story line to the other, back and forth across the Pacific, but the reader never loses place or interest. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The publisher is in love with this novel and will do everything from providing an author tour to presenting extensive radio and online publicity campaigns to bring its virtues to a wide reading audience. --Brad Hooper

Review
“An exquisite novel: funny, tragic, hard-edged and ethereal at once.”
—David Ulin, Los Angeles Times

“As contemporary as a Japanese teenager’s slang but as ageless as a Zen koan, Ruth Ozeki’s new novel combines great storytelling with a probing investigation into the purpose of existence. . . . She plunges us into a tantalizing narration that brandishes mysteries to be solved and ideas to be explored. . . . Ozeki’s profound affection for her characters makes A Tale for the Time Being as emotionally engaging as it is intellectually provocative.”
—The Washington Post

“A delightful yet sometimes harrowing novel . . . Many of the elements of Nao’s story—schoolgirl bullying, unemployed suicidal ‘salarymen,’ kamikaze pilots—are among a Western reader’s most familiar images of Japan, but in Nao’s telling, refracted through Ruth’s musings, they become fresh and immediate, occasionally searingly painful. Ozeki takes on big themes . . . all drawn into the stories of two ‘time beings,’ Ruth and Nao, whose own fates are inextricably bound.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“Sixteen-year-old schoolgirl Nao Yasutani’s voice is the heart and soul of this very satisfying book. . . . The contemporary Japanese style and use of magical realismare reminiscent of author Haruki Murakami.”
—USA Today

“A terrific novel full of breakthroughs both personal and literary. . . . Ozeki revels in Tokyo teen culture—this goes far beyond Hello Kitty—and explores quantum physics, military applications of computer video games, Internet bullying, and Marcel Proust, all while creating a vulnerable and unique voice for the sixteen-year-old girl at its center. . . . Ozeki has produced a dazzling and humorous work of literary origami. . . . Nao’s voice—funny, profane and deep—is stirring and unforgettable as she ponders the meaning of her life.”
—The Seattle Times

“Beautifully written, intensely readable and richly layered . . . one of the best books of the year so far.”
—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“Masterfully woven . . . Entwining Japanese language with WWII history, pop culture with Proust, Zen with quantum mechanics, Ozeki alternates between the voices of two women to produce a spellbinding tale.”
—O, The Oprah Magazine

“Forget the proverbial message in a bottle: This Tale fractures clichs as it affirms the lifesaving power of words. . . . As Ozeki explores the ties between reader and writer, she offers a lesson in redemption that reinforces the pricelessness of the here and now.”
—Elle

“A powerful yarn of fate and parallel lives.”
—Good Housekeeping

“Ozeki weaves together Nao’s adolescent yearnings with Ruth’s contemplative digressions, adding bits of Zen wisdom, as well as questions about agency, creativity, life, death, and human connections along the way. A Tale for the Time Being is a dreamy, spiritual investigation of how to gracefully meet the waves of time, which, in the end, come for us all.”
—The Daily Beast

“As we read Nao’s story and the story of Ozeki’s reading of it, as we go back and forth between the text and the notes, time expands for us. It opens up onto something resembling narrative eternity . . . page after page, slowly unfolding. And what a beautiful effect that is for a novel to create.”
—Alan Cheuse, NPR’s All Things Considered

“Superb . . .her best and most adventurous novel to date . . . likely to leave readers feeling its emotional impact for a long time to come.”
—BookPage

“Magnificent . . . brings together a Japanese girl’s diary and a transplanted American novelist to meditate on everything from bullying to the nature of conscience and the meaning of life. . . . The novel’s seamless web of language, metaphor, and meaning can’t be disentangled from its powerful emotional impact: These are characters we care for deeply, imparting vital life lessons through the magic of storytelling. A masterpiece, pure and simple.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“An intriguing, even beautiful narrative remarkable for its unusual but attentively structured plot. . . . We go from one story line to the other, back and forth across the Pacific, but the reader never loses place or interest.”
—Booklist (starred review)

“Ozeki’s absorbing novel is an extended meditation on writing, time, and people in time. . . . The characters’ lives are finely drawn, from Ruth’s rustic lifestyle to the Yasutani family’s straitened existence after moving from Sunnyvale, California, to Tokyo. Nao’s winsome voice contrasts with Ruth’s intellectual ponderings to make up a lyrical disquisition on writing’s power to transcend time and place. This tale from Ozeki, a Zen Buddhist priest, is sure to please anyone who values a good story broadened with intellectual vigor.”
—Publishers Weekly

“An extraordinary novel about a courageous young woman, riven by loneliness, by time, and (ultimately) by tsunami.Nao is an inspired narrator and her quest to tell her great grandmother’s story, to connect with her past and with the larger world is both aching and true.Ozeki is one of my favorite novelists and here she is at her absolute best—bewitching, intelligent, hilarious, and heartbreaking, often on the same page.”
—Junot Daz, Pulitzer Prize winnerand author of ThisIs How You Lose Her

“A beautifully interwoven novel about magic and loss and the incomprehensible threads that connect our lives. I loved it.”
—Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love

“A Tale for the Time Being is a timeless story. Ruth Ozeki beautifully renders not only the devastation of the collision between man and the natural world, but also its often miraculous results.”
—Alice Sebold, bestselling author of The Lovely Bones

“Ingenious and touching. . . . I read it with great pleasure.”
—Philip Pullman, award-winning author of The Golden Compass

“One of the most deeply moving and thought-provoking novels I have read in a long time. In precise and luminous prose, Ozeki captures both the sweep and detail of our shared humanity. The result is gripping, fearless, inspiring andtrue.”
—Madeline Miller, author of the Orange Prize winner The Song of Achilles

“A Tale for the Time Being is equal parts mystery and meditation. The mystery is a compulsive, gritty page-turner.The meditation—on time and memory, on the oceanic movement of history, on impermanence and uncertainty, but also resilience and bravery—is deep and gorgeous and wise.A completely satisfying, continually surprising, wholly remarkable achievement.”
—Karen Joy Fowler, bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club

“A great achievement, and the work of a writer at the height of her powers. Ruth Ozeki has not only reinvigorated the novel itself, the form, but she’s given us the tried and true, deep and essential pleasure of characters we love and who matter.”
—Jane Hamilton, bestselling author of A Map of the World

“Profoundly original, with authentic, touching characters and grand, encompassing themes, Ruth Ozeki’s novel proves that truly great stories—like this one—can both deepen our understanding of self and remind us of our shared humanity.”
—Deborah Harkness, bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night

“I’ve long been an admirer of Ruth Ozeki’s work, and her exquisite, richly textured novel, A Tale for the Time Being, marks the stunning return of a writer at the height of her powers. Seamlessly weaving together tales of the past and present that are equally magical and heartbreaking, she transports us to the worlds of Nao and Jiko, in Japan, and Ruth, on a remote island in British Columbia, where their worlds collide as they reach across time to find the meaning of life and home. . . . A wise and wonderfully inventive story that will resonate through time.”
—Gail Tsukiyama, bestselling author of The Samurai’s Garden

Beautiful, exquisite, delightful!
By Caroline Williams
This was a wonderful book. It was multilayered, moving back and forth between the experience of a young girl in Japan and a woman living in Canada. The story explored themes of Zen Buddhism, quantum physics, animal spirits and totems, the effects of the tsunami in Japan, bullying, mental illness and suicide, and moral choices during wartime. All of these weighty themes are combined in a very enjoyable, seamless way. I couldn't put the book down. It has an uplifting, hopeful ending. It is whimsical, graceful and smart. The author has given a wonderful gift to the world. Thank you! This is the first review I have ever written for Amazon, and the reason is that I enjoyed the book so much. I would highly recommend this novel!

Intricately layered. This is going to be one of the best releases of the year!
By Monika
It's not often a book gets me excited about reading it as soon as I open it, but that's what happened with A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. Right away, in the first few pages, readers are treated to a unique, young voice. Naoko is contemplative, wiser than she realizes, and speaks without tempering her words. She displays a very stark self-awareness which often caused me to catch my breath.

This novel has so many intricate layers, I know I can't do it justice in this review. A colleague of mine once told me he always loves listening to, performing, and conducting Beethoven's 5th Symphony, even though he's done so countless times. For him, it never gets old or stale. He always hears something new, notices something that gives it even more depth and meaning. I can imagine reading A Tale for the Time Being again and again and having this same reaction.

In a way, I think Naoko exemplifies the complexity and full freedom of religion in modern Japanese culture. She isn't overtly religious, but she is very open-minded, which allows her to pull the truths and strength she desperately needs. Naoko's time with her great-grandmother Jiko is profoundly beautiful, and the descriptions of Buddhist traditions and ceremonies are absolutely breathtaking.

Ruth says she "wanted to read at the same rate [Naoko] had lived" and at times found it difficult to resist the temptation to quickly devour the entire story. I definitely shared that feeling! I found myself getting impatient during the scenes with Ruth and Oliver. I just wanted Ruth to get back to reading Naoko's diary. I had to know what happened next!

A Tale for the Time Being will appeal to those who enjoy contemporary fiction, those who enjoy a bit of the fantastic with some magical realism, those who like their fiction to be intertwined with science, philosophy, history, and politics. Marcel Proust is quoted in the book: "Every reader, while he is reading, is the reader of his own self." Ozeki explores some thought-provoking angles concerning the importance of the reader to a novel. This novel challenged and stretched my thinking, and I always appreciate that.

This was my first time reading any of Ozeki's books, and I am left with the compulsion to go buy everything she's written. I am certain this novel is going to end up listed as one of the best releases of the year.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I did not receive any other compensation for this review.

Slow-moving existential angst...
By FictionFan
Shortlisted for the 2013 Booker, this tells two intertwined tales - of Nao, a Japanese schoolgirl, and of Ruth, a Canadian author of Japanese heritage. Ruth has found Nao's journal washed up on the shore and begins to obsess about finding out whether the people and events Nao discusses are true. Nao's story is of a young girl who has lived most of her life in California but has now returned to Japan and we see the society through her eyes.

Nao's story is interesting, if bleak. Having been brought up in California, Nao is seen as an outsider by her classmates on her return to Japan. We learn of the extreme bullying she is both subjected to and participates in at school, leading her to drop out. Meantime, her suicidal father is making repeated failed attempts to end his own life, leading Nao to harbour suicidal thoughts of her own. In an effort to break this cycle, her parents send her to spend the summer with her old great-grandmother, a Zen nun, who rapidly becomes Nao's sole support and spiritual guide. While here, Nao learns the story of her great-uncle, a war-hero who died during WWII.

Ruth's story is a dull distraction. Ruth is a writer, struggling with long-term writers block, giving Ozeki the opportunity to tell the reader, at length, how very, very tough life is for writers - even one who lives in fairly idyllic surroundings with no apparent real health or money worries and with a partner who loves and supports her. She is also in a perpetual state of existential angst and this part of the novel merely serves to interrupt and slow to a crawl the telling of Nao's tale. And to make matters worse, Ozeki introduces a quasi-mystical, quasi-quantum-mechanical element into Ruth's part that turns Nao's believable and often moving story into some kind of mystical fantasy in the end. The underlying questions that are being examined - of identity and the nature of time - are addressed with a subtlety in Nao's story that is almost destroyed by the clumsy handling of Ruth's portion of the book.

The writing is skilful and confident for the most part and, when telling a plain tale, Ozeki writes movingly and often beautifully. Unfortunately she has attempted to be too clever in this, not just with the supernatural nonsense, but with the whole conceit of Ruth translating Nao's diary as we go along. This leads to lots of unnecessary footnotes, silly little drawings and playing with fonts, all of which merely serve to distract from the story. Ruth will translate a sentence except for one or two words, which she leaves as Japanese in the main body of the text, and then gives the translation a footnote - why? It would be understandable if she only did this with concepts which may be unfamiliar to a Western audience, but she does it for normal words - like leaving in 'zangyo' and telling us in a footnote that this means 'overtime'. The flow of reading is constantly interrupted by the need to check the bottom of the page to find out what the sentence means.

While sometimes telling a story from different points of views adds depth, in this case unfortunately the contrast serves only to weaken the thrust and impact of the main story. Had this been a plainer telling of Nao's story alone, it would probably have got top rating from me, and overall there is enough talent on display here to mean that I may look out for more of Ozeki's work, keeping my fingers crossed she finds a way to end future books without resorting to the fantastical. But, for me, it's hard to see how this could stand in contention with either of the other Booker nominees I've read this year - Harvest or Testament of Mary. Of course, that probably means it will win...
