Courtney doesn't even think she believes in love...that is, until she meets the vampire next door. Valeria “Lare” Mille is a gorgeous scientist working on cutting-edge genetics. She also just happens to be a vampire, and Courtney's new neighbor. Sparks fly from the very first moment Courtney and Lare meet, and their attraction is undeniable. But in a world where vampires have just “come out” of hiding, tensions between humans and vampires are running high. When Lare's co-workers begin to go missing, it looks like foul play may put Lare in danger, too. Will Courtney and Lare have a chance at love, or is the cost of falling for a vampire too high? THE VAMPIRE NEXT DOOR is a light-hearted paranormal romance that will take you on a journey you’ll never forget. Written by wife-and-wife authors Natalie Vivien (known for her laugh-out-loud contemporary romances) and Bridget Essex (known for her vampires and werewolves in love), THE VAMPIRE NEXT DOOR is a marriage of humor, steamy romance and a love story that's out of this world.

Vampires, human people, love, hate. What more do you need?
By Loek
I've not yet read a lot of books about vampires, but this was different than all the others I've read. It takes place in a world that I almost can not imagine. A world where vampires and "human" people integrate. I must say, it did not feel strange. I could live in that world. The love is awesome and the tension is quite palpable. You're going to love the protagonists. The writers individually are very good writers but together they are great. I hope they are going to write a lot together. I recommend this book highly. You'll be captivated from the beginning to the end.

Very nice
By Skip
I enjoyed this book a lot. Courtney & Lare are great characters. They jump to life right from the start. The story was compelling, keeping me entangled all the way through. Lots of drama, laughter, tension and just plain fun. Another great story from two very enjoyable authors.

Funny, complex, and romantic
By Katie Raynes
This is, hands down, one of the best romances I've ever read. The supernatural element is handled really well. It's set in a world where vampires are "out" - they live openly in society with humans, but this is a new development and there's a lot of hatred and prejudice toward them. This was a fresh take in my experience on the vampire angle, because normally the human characters have to come to terms with the fact that vampires exist, and that's always a huge shock. In this story, that revelation had already happened, and it allowed the focus to be on Courtney and Lare's developing relationship and their navigation through the hatred vampires are subject to.

I was really impressed with how complex all of the characters were, even the antagonists. I was particularly impressed with how complexly Mia, Courtney's girlfriend, was written. While the romance takes center stage (and is absolutely delicious) there are other plots winding through, and I enjoyed the little tidbits of foreshadowing that were sprinkled throughout. The writing is continuously gorgeous, as I would expect from these authors, and it shines even more when they write together. I wasn't left feeling like anything was unfinished. I would recommend this book to anyone, including those who aren't familiar with vampires. It created its own mythology and I really loved that.

I Wanted to Love this Book More than Anything.... Was seriously let down.
By T. A. Reynolds
I love RPG's. I love MHI. I thought I had found my "Happy Place" when I found this book, and at first blush I did.

The information is great! All the sneak peaks and background information are sweet. The HERO system is also VERY cool, if you're willing to put the time into it to create your characters from the ground up.

There is one MAJOR problem with the book however. The statement that it is a standalone book is a down right lie.

After buying this book I volunteered to be the game master for my group and happily sat down to build a custom campaign with all kinds of plot twists and supernatural awesomeness. What I quickly discovered is that the authors assumed players wouldn't mind not understanding how all the rules worked together. Monsters were built using powers and skills that aren't even listed in the book. The mechanics of combat are missing a few very KEY pieces of information and ultimately, if I hadn't resorted to MANY, MANY posts on the HERO forums we would be playing some gimped up game with some pretty glaring errors.

What I discovered after spending all my time on the forums is that this book was based on a discontinued rule set established in "The Basic Rulebook." The Basic Rulebook was discontinued because the fans of the HERO system literally put together a compilation of all the errors, omissions and discrepancies in the basic rule book and (i'm assuming here) it was deemed less than satisfactory by the community at large.

Normally I wouldn't have a problem with this, but when the authors just rubber stamp a BAD document with some cosmetic updates for the sake of speed, and don't even bother to incorporate the corrections their die hard fans put together for them (That's FREE work by customers), I get frustrated.

If you want to buy the book simply to support Larry, go for it.

If you want to buy the book and are willing to pour 20 + hours just trying to fill in the gaps, so you can play the actual RPG, go for it.

If you're looking for a game system that you can pick up, along with 2 or 3 supplemental volumes, go for it.

If you don't fall into any of these categories. I'd avoid this like the plague.

Shame on you Mr. Long.

Great Game
By David Blood
I'm a RPG player and huge fan of Larry Correia's Monster Hunter books, so this was a no brainer for me. The game uses the HERO system, which is an established and award winning RPG system.

The HERO system was new to me, however. It was pretty easy to pick up.

So far, my group has only had one session - character creation and some exhibition combat to learn the rules. (The books have only been available for a few weeks - even to Kickstarter backers) Character creation can be a long process, and it does require some familiarity with the rules. The game is front-loaded with complexity in that way. Of my group, I'm the GM, and I am the only one who needs to read all the rules. The other players were fairly new to playing tabletop RPGs, but they got the hang of it pretty quickly.

After characters are made, however, things get a lot easier. Combat is pretty straight forward.

The book itself is very nice. Well put together. Hard backed with thick quality pages and full color. All you need to play is in the book - rules, monsters, example characters, gear, etc. Some paper, pencils and regular 6 sided dice are the only "extras" needed, and you've probably got those laying around the house.

If you play RPGs and like the Monster Hunter books, you need to play this game.

If you love MHI and dont mind some terrible art this is great
By Albert Bottemiller
Only took off a star for the horrible artwork, (not all of it). They consulted closely with the MHI author Larry Corriea on this and it shows. Excellent game and even more excellent back ground on one of my ALL time favorite series. Even if you don't get the game, read the Monster Hunter International series. If you're players haven't read it, keep things close to the vest. If you give them the book to read it can spoil a lot of plot lines.

Healthy living
By judith
This book is more helpful for healthy living than any prescription in the country. When my mom had cancer and followed the instructions, the cancer went away and she was healthy for over twenty years. When cancer came again and she did the "normal" chemotherapy, it caused strokes and other bad side effects but did not cure the cancer. I used it and cured diabetes in four months. I recommend this book to anyone who has health problems, and to anyone who does not want to get health problems.

This will be the only book about herbs that you need
By M. Boothe
No stone left unturned in this book! This man has a thorough and accurate understanding of herbs and their uses. He was a Master Herbalist and I have many books on this subject...this one, however, is the 20th anniversary, expanded version issue and is the Bible of them all. I promise you, even if you're traveling, you will want to keep it with you. His personal life story is a miracle to me, he was an abandoned child found by some loving people in an orphanage when he was a young boy. And what a contribution to humanity this man has made! It's the best book that exist about the use of herbs. Also, helps you to identify plants and tells you what parts to use. I love his work, it's written for all the right reasons, he had been critically ill in his youth and his work sprung from those hardships. It is inspired!

Wowzers - a must own for any aspiring herbalist
By Erin
Dr. Christopher was an amazing pioneer in herbal medicine. The thick, lengthy book will never leave the wondering mind hungry, delving deeply into a variety of herbs with insightful personal usage, history, and formulas. The book begins with paragraphs under different conditions, but the heart of the book is the herbal details, where Christopher clearly expresses his love, admiration, and faith in natural medicine. He cites other herbalists such as Thomson and Shook, following in the same vein of thought as Eclectics before him, stretching it even further with personal opinions and sage advise. While some of the output is slightly dated, most of it is not, still stands as true today, and will always be invaluable information.

If you're ever seeking a reference guide for herbs, this is surely the one, as Christopher goes as far as to describe in a detailed, eye-catching way the habitat, full description from leaf to odor to flower to taste to stem, to properties, dose, preparation, therapeutic action, oral/anal/skin administration of all. So many herbs are covered in such rich detail it's impossible not to use this as a guide when learning a new herb. As many Eclectics were, Christopher was a big fan of the herb Lobelia, devoting here an entire chapter on it alone. However, the old "puke your brains out" use is now considered unsafe and outdated, but some of the herbs recommendations still stand strong today.

After the massive herbal index is read, there's a marvelous chapter on collecting herbs, preparing them in a huge amount of way, from tinctures to compounds to cerates to suppositories to pills to capsules to washes and baths, and much more.

Formulas are here in every chapter, from older ones passed down from other great herbalists to lesser knowns, from Christopher himself and what he used in his personal practice, and from general herbal combinations that go under each herb in its own section. He wraps up the book with two great glossaries, and a chapter exclusively discussing his 'mucusless diet', an eating regimen still followed actively to this day. Of course the preceeding chapter brings up the regenerative diet, dietary recommendations on certain food substances, proper ways of living besides herbal therapy, and some deliciously appealing culinary recipes to whip up in the kitchen for a healthful treat.

Out of the dozens of herbal books I own, this is one of those I turn to the most, for the knowledge in here is thrilling, and the knowledge almost overwhelming since it covers so much. Well worth the price, Dr. Christopher's name is a household one among herbalists for a good reason.

Shakespeare's Dark Lady: Amelia Bassano Lanier The woman behind Shakespeare's plays?, by John Hudson

Amelia Bassano was born in 1569 into a family of Venetian Jews who were court musicians to Queen Elizabeth I. At about the age of thirteen, she became mistress to the fifty-six-year-old Lord Hunsdon, Henry VIII s reputed son by Mary Boleyn. As Lord Chamberlain, Hunsdon was in charge of the English theatre and would become the patron of the company that performed the Shakespearean plays. Amelia lived with him for a decade, during which time she also had an affair with the playwright Christopher Marlowe. When she became pregnant, Amelia was exiled from court and next surfaces as the mysterious dark lady in Shakespeare s sonnets. At the age of forty-two, she became the first woman to publish a book of original poetry, employing linguistic features resembling the later Shakespearean plays. Amelia died in poverty in 1645. Drawing upon a wealth of documentary evidence, this controversial and provocative book unites Tudor history, feminism, and Shakespeare scholarship to demonstrate that Amelia Bassano was in all the right places and had all the right knowledge, skills, and contacts to have produced the Shakespearean canon.

Incredible and Revolutionary
By Montserrat Mendez
When I first read this book, I just couldn't believe it. And wrapping my head around it took several readings. But John Hudson presents an incredibly solid case that needs to be considered, studied and discussed. There's also the incredible details of Elizabethan Theatre as a way of life. And hasn't that way of life always been a business. Whether you believe the theory or not (and John Hudson's razor-like research will make you a believer) the time has come for people to discover Amelia Bassano, and her contribution to the literature of the ages.

REVIEW IN KIRKUS REVIEWS
By John Hudson
KIRKUS REVIEW

Hudson’s first book is a scholarly examination of the ongoing debate about the authorship of the works of William Shakespeare.

Hudson argues that an obscure but talented woman named Amelia Bassano Lanier—posited to be both Shakespeare’s “dark lady” of the sonnets and a “secret Jew”—was in the right place at the right time, and had the right skills and knowledge, to be the true creator of classics such as Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. Regardless of one’s opinion on the subject of the Bard of Avon’s works and their provenance, this book is a smart, wide-ranging examination of the society and circumstances of the 16th and 17th centuries. Subjects covered include Shakespearean scholarship itself (and its methods), life in late Renaissance London and the British royal court, English theater, plagues, gender, religion, intellectual life and a great deal more. Hudson argues that Shakespeare’s plays, like Lanier’s work, are highly critical of Christianity, that they reflect her travels (including a journey to Denmark) and that Lanier—like Shakespeare—is said to have undertaken a brief career as a schoolteacher. That Lanier had so much of the same background as Shakespeare supports Hudson’s theory; that she had even more of the necessary background than the Bard did (as a musician, a law clerk, etc.) makes Hudson’s case even more compelling. Even if Lanier didn’t write the works of Shakespeare, she is a notable person in her own right. Exhaustively documented, with a lengthy bibliography and full index, the volume is clearly written and makes a deeply intriguing case for its thesis. Although many readers will take exception to its ideas from the very beginning (not everyone agrees that the generally known biography of Shakespeare makes him “superhuman” or his efforts “impossible”), Hudson’s historical sleuthing and careful speculation make the Lanier theory at least as plausible as most of the others (from Edward de Vere, Christopher Marlowe and Francis Bacon on down). With graphics that include a “knowledge map” of which candidates might have been able to write which plays and symmetry analyses of some of the major works, the book advances these ideas concisely and with great rhetorical conviction.

Well-researched, fascinating and thought-provoking

The Dark Lady Defined as Prime Candidate
By Linda H.
This is an utterly fascinating read! Exquisitely argued, it brings Shakespeare's London and the characters who peopled it vibrantly to life while explicating in minute detail Hudson's contention that Amelia Bassano Lanier -- the "Dark Lady" -- was the author of the Shakespeare plays.
In view of the fact that what is known of Shakespeare's life does not jibe with command of the fields of knowledge evinced in the plays' contents, and because other often-mooted candidates for authorship -- the Earl of Oxford, Marlowe, Bacon, etc. -- also did not have all these fields of knowledge at their disposal, Amelia Bassano Lanier is a candidate to reckon with in that she did have a background that includes familiarity with court life, generalship, Judaism, science, astronomy, music, girls' literature, canals in Italy and a fresco in Bassano, not to mention silk culture and even falconry.
As Michael Posner points out in the introduction, there is as yet "no definitive smoking gun" (p. 10). However, as Hudson makes clear in his thoughtful final chapter, scholarship has only just begun to focus on Amelia Bassano Lanier. Who knows what evidence will be found tomorrow? In the meantime, by all means read this brilliant book.

Prussian Blue (A Bernie Gunther Novel), by Philip Kerr

From New York Times–bestselling author Philip Kerr, the much-anticipated return of Bernie Gunther, our compromised former Berlin bull and unwilling SS officer. With his cover blown, he is waiting for the next move in the cat-and-mouse game that, even a decade after Germany’s defeat, continues to shadow his life.

The French Riviera, 1956: The invitation to dinner was not unexpected, though neither was it welcome. ErichMielke, deputy head of the East German Stasi, has turned up in Nice, and he’s not on holiday. An old and dangerous adversary, Mielke is calling in a debt. He intends that Bernie go to London and, with the vial of Thallium he now pushes across the table, poison a female agent they both have had dealings with.

But chance intervenes in the form of Friedrich Korsch, an old Kripo comrade now working for Stasi and probably there to make sure Bernie gets the job done. Bernie bolts for the German border. Traveling by night, holed up during the day, Bernie has plenty of down time to recall the last time Korsch and he worked together.

It was the summer of 1939: At Hitler’s mountaintop retreat in Obersalzberg, the body of a low-level bureaucrat has been found murdered. Bernie and Korsch are selected to run the case. They have one week to solve the murder—Hitler is due back then to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. Lucky Bernie: it’s his reward for being Kripo’s best homicide detective. He knows what a box he’s in: millions have been spent to secure Obersalzberg. It would be a disaster if Hitler were to discover a shocking murder had been committed on the terrace of his own home. But the mountaintop is home to an elite Nazi community. It would be an even bigger disaster for Bernie if one of them was the murderer.

1939 and 1956: two different eras, seventeen years apart. And yet, not really apart, as the stunning climax will show when the two converge explosively.

Review
Praise for Prussian Blue

“[B]risk and agile...Gunther is one of crime fiction’s most gratifyingly melancholy creations, and in 'Prussian Blue'we watch him match wits with the officialdom of two Germanys, pre- and postwar.”—The Washington Post

“Bernie Gunther—sly, subversive, sardonic, and occasionally hilarious—is one of the greatest anti-heroes ever written, and as always he lights up this tough and unflinching novel. We're in good hands here.”—Lee Child

“Once again Kerr leads us through the facts of history and the vagaries of human nature. His Bernie Gunther thinks he’s seen it all. But he hasn’t, and luckily, neither have we.”—Tom Hanks

"In Prussian Blue, Philip Kerr once more shows himselfone of the greatest master story-tellers in English. Thenarrative is swift and adept, and so well-grounded inthe history and custom of the period that the readeris totally immersed.”—Alan Furst

“Kerr once again brilliantly uses a whodunit to bring to horrifying life the Nazi regime’s corruption and brutality.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“In thisskillfully plotted thriller, Kerr punctures the present with the painful past. Fans of the series won’t be disappointed.”—Library Journal

Praise for Philip Kerr

“Kerr vividly captures the excruciating moral ambiguity of Bernie’s position, driving home the point that cynicism is the only sane reaction for a man on the wrong side of history.”—Booklist

“The intricacies of the plot, partly based on Maugham’s history as a British spy in charge of a team of secret agents, make this one of Kerr’s best technical efforts. But it’s the characterization of Maugham and the sound of his voice...that makes this novel memorable.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Readers who love hard-boiled heroes fell for Bernie Gunther back when he was a Berlin cop talking tough to Nazi thugs (March Violets, 1989), and we loved him just as much when he was forced to become an SS soldier on the Eastern Front (Field Gray, 2011). And yet, those whose own dark core runs deep may well love the postwar Bernie most of all, the Bernie whose cynicism has slowly morphed into black despair, like whiskey gradually eating its way through a defenseless liver....The Other Side of Silence is one of the best in a sterling series.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Kerr carefully develops his plot, sense of place, and characterizations, enabling readers to imagine what it must have been like to have lived in a postwar morass of political and moral ambiguity. This is more than a crime or espionage novel; it’s a marvelous, hard-boiled political read.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“Intricate enough to satisfy puzzle-minded readers...right out of the Agatha Christie playbook.”—The Washington Post

“Blackmail, murder, deception, sexual shenanigans of every sort, and an undercurrent of black humor pervade Philip Kerr’s 11th novel featuring the unsinkable German detective Bernie Gunther.”—Pittsburg Post Gazette

October 1956

It was the end of the season and most of the hotels on the Riviera, including the Grand H™tel Cap Ferrat, where I worked, were already closed for the winter. Not that winter meant much in that part of the world. Not like in Berlin, where winter is more a rite of passage than a season: you're not a true Berliner until you've survived the bitter experience of an interminable Prussian winter; that famous dancing bear you see on the city's coat of arms is just trying to keep himself warm.

The Hotel Ruhl was normally one of the last hotels in Nice to close because it had a casino and people like to gamble whatever the weather. Maybe they should have opened a casino in the nearby Hotel Negresco-which the Ruhl resembled, except that the Negresco was closed and looked as if it might stay that way the following year. Some said they were going to turn it into apartments but the Negresco concierge-who was an acquaintance of mine, and a fearful snob-said the place had been sold to the daughter of a Breton butcher, and he wasn't usually wrong about these things. He was off to Bern for the winter and probably wouldn't be back. I was going to miss him but as I parked my car and crossed the Promenade des Anglais to the Hotel Ruhl I really wasn't thinking about that. Perhaps it was the cold night air and the barman's surplus ice cubes in the gutter but instead I was thinking about Germany. Or perhaps it was the sight of the two crew-cut golems standing outside the hotel's grand Mediterranean entrance, eating ice cream cones and wearing thick East German suits of the kind that are mass-produced like tractor parts and shovels. Just seeing those two thugs ought to have put me on my guard but I had something important on my mind; I was looking forward to meeting my wife, Elisabeth, who, out of the blue, had sent me a letter inviting me to dinner. We were separated, and she was living back in Berlin, but Elisabeth's handwritten letter-she had beautiful SŸtterlin handwriting (banned by the Nazis)-spoke of her having come into a bit of money, which just might have explained how she could afford to be back on the Riviera and staying at the Ruhl, which is almost as expensive as the Angleterre or the Westminster. Either way I was looking forward to seeing her again with the blind faith of one who hoped reconciliation was on the cards. I'd already planned the short but graceful speech of forgiveness I was going to make. How much I missed her and thought we could still make a go of it-that kind of thing. Of course, a part of me was also braced for the possibility she might be there to tell me she'd met someone else and wanted a divorce. Still, it seemed like a lot of trouble to go to-it wasn't easy to travel from Berlin these days.

The hotel restaurant was on the top floor in one of the corner cupolas. It was perhaps the best in Nice, designed by Charles Dalmas. Certainly it was the most expensive. I hadn't ever eaten there but I'd heard the food was excellent and I was looking forward to my dinner. The m‰itre d' sidestepped his way across the beautiful Belle Epoque room, met me at the bookings lectern, and found my wife's name on the page. I was already glancing over his shoulder, searching the tables anxiously for Elisabeth and not finding her there yet, checking my watch and realizing that I was perhaps a little early. I wasn't really listening to the m‰itre d' as he informed me that my host had arrived, and I was halfway across the marble floor when I saw I was being ushered to a quiet corner table where a squat, tough-looking man was already working on a very large lobster and a bottle of white Burgundy. Recognizing him immediately, I turned on my heel only to find my exit blocked by two more apes who looked as if they might have climbed in through the open window, off one of the many palm trees on the Promenade.

"Don't leave yet," one of them said quietly in thick, Leipzig-accented German. "The comrade-general wouldn't like it."

For a moment I stood my ground, wondering if I could risk making a run for the door. But the two men, cut from the same crude mold as the two golems I'd seen by the hotel entrance, were more than a match for me.

"That's right," added the other. "So you'd best sit down like a good boy and avoid making a scene."

"Gunther," said a voice behind me, also speaking German. "Bernhard Gunther. Come over here and sit down, you old fascist. Don't be afraid." He laughed. "I'm not going to shoot you. It's a public place." I suppose he assumed that German speakers were at a premium in the Hotel Ruhl and he probably wouldn't have been wrong. "What could possibly happen to you in here? Besides, the food is excellent and the wine more so."

I turned again and took another look at the man who remained seated and was still applying himself to the lobster with his cracker and a pick, like a plumber changing the washer on a tap. He was wearing a better suit than his men-a blue pinstripe, tailor-made-and a patterned silk tie that could only have been bought in France. A tie like that would have cost a week's wages in the GDR and probably earned you a lot of awkward questions at the local police station, as would the large gold watch that flashed on his wrist like a miniature lighthouse as he gouged at the flesh of the lobster, which was the same color as the more abundant flesh of his powerful hands. His hair was still dark on top but cut so short against the sides of his wrecking ball of a head it looked like a priest's black zucchetto. He'd put on some weight since last I'd seen him, and he hadn't even started on the new potatoes, the mayonnaise, the asparagus tips, the salade nioise, sweet cucumber pickles, and a plate of dark chocolate arranged on the table in front of him. With his boxer's physique he reminded me strongly of Martin Bormann, Hitler's deputy chief of staff; he was certainly every bit as dangerous.

I sat down, poured myself a glass of white wine, and tossed my cigarette case onto the table in front of me.

"General Erich Mielke," I said. "What an unexpected pleasure."

"I'm sorry about bringing you here under false pretenses. But I knew you wouldn't have come if I'd said it was I who was buying dinner."

"Is she all right? Elisabeth? Just tell me that and then I'll listen to whatever you have to say, General."

"Yes, she's fine."

"I take it she's not actually here in Nice."

"No, she's not. I'm sorry about that. But you'll be glad to know that she was most reluctant to write that letter. I had to explain that the alternative would have been so much more painful, for you at least. So please don't hold that letter against her. She wrote it for the best of reasons." Mielke lifted an arm and snapped his fingers at the waiter. "Have something to eat. Have some wine. I drink very little myself but I'm told this is the best. Anything you like. I insist. The Ministry of State Security is paying. Only, please don't smoke. I hate the smell of cigarettes, especially when I'm eating."

"I'm not hungry, thanks."

"Of course you are. You're a Berliner. We don't have to be hungry to eat. The war taught us to eat when there's food on the table."

"Well, there's plenty of food on this table. Are we expecting anyone else? The Red Army, perhaps?"

"I like to see lots of food when I'm eating, even if I don't eat any of it. It's not just a man's stomach that needs filling. It's his senses, too."

I picked up the bottle and inspected the label.

"Corton-Charlemagne. I approve. Nice to see that an old communist like you can still appreciate a few of the finer things in life, General. This wine must be the most expensive on the list."

"I do, and it most certainly is."

I drained the glass and poured myself another. It was excellent.

The waiter approached nervously, as if he'd already felt the edge of Mielke's tongue.

"We'll have two juicy steaks," said Mielke, speaking good French-the result, I imagined, of his two years spent in a French prison camp before and during the war. "No, better still, we'll have the Chateaubriand. And make it very bloody."

The waiter went away.

"Is it just steak you prefer that way?" I said. "Or everything else as well?"

"Still got that sense of humor, Gunther. It beats me how you've stayed alive for this long."

"The French are a little more tolerant of these things than they are in what you laughingly call the Democratic Republic of Germany. Tell me, General, when is the communist government going to dissolve the people and elect another?"

"The people?" Mielke laughed, and breaking off from his lobster for a moment, placed a piece of chocolate into his mouth, almost as if it were a matter of indifference what he was eating just as long as it was something not easily obtained in the GDR. "They rarely know what's best for them. Nearly fourteen million Germans voted for Hitler in March 1932, making the Nazis the largest party in the Reichstag. Do you honestly believe they had a clue what was best for them? No, of course not. Nobody did. All the people care about is a regular pay packet, cigarettes, and beer."

"I expect that's why twenty thousand East German refugees were crossing into the Federal Republic every month-at least until you imposed your so-called special regime with its restricted zone and your protective strip. They were in search of better beer and cigarettes and perhaps the chance to complain a little without fear of the consequences."

"Who was it said that none are more hopelessly enslaved than those who believe they are free?"

"It was Goethe. And you misquote him. He said that none are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free."

"In my book, they are one and the same."

"That would be the one book you've read, then."

"You're a romantic fool. I forget that about you, sometimes. Look, Gunther, most people's idea of freedom is to write something rude on a lavatory wall. My own belief is that the people are lazy and prefer to leave the business of government to the government. However, it's important that the people don't place too great a burden on those in charge of things. Hence, my presence here in France. Generally speaking I prefer to go hunting. But I often come here around this time of year to get away from my responsibilities. I like to play a little baccarat."

"That's a high-risk game. But then you always were a gambler."

"You want to know the really great thing about gambling here?" He grinned. "Most of the time, I lose. If there were still such decadent things as casinos in the GDR I'm afraid the croupiers would always make sure I won. Winning is only fun if you can lose. I used to go to the one in Baden-Baden but the last time I was there I was recognized and couldn't go again. So now I come to Nice. Or sometimes Le Touquet. But I prefer Nice. The weather is a little more reliable here than on the Atlantic coast."

"Somehow I don't believe that's all you're here for."

"You're right."

"So what the hell do you want?"

"You remember that business a few months back, with Somerset Maugham and our mutual friends Harold Hennig and Anne French. You almost managed to screw up a good operation there."

Mielke was referring to a Stasi plot to discredit Roger Hollis, the deputy director of MI5-the British domestic counterintelligence and security agency. The real plan had been to leave Hollis smelling of roses after the bogus Stasi plot was revealed.

"It was very good of you to tie up that loose end for us," said Mielke. "It was you who killed Hennig, wasn't it?"

I didn't answer but we both knew this was true; I'd shot Harold Hennig dead in the house Anne French had been renting in Villefranche and done my very best to frame her for it. Since then the French police had asked me all sorts of questions about her, but that was all I knew. As far as I was aware, Anne French remained safely back in England.

"Well, for the sake of argument, let's just say it was you," said Mielke. He finished the piece of chocolate he was eating, forked some pickled cucumber into his mouth, and then swallowed a mouthful of white Burgundy, all of which persuaded me that his taste buds were every bit as corrupt as his politics and morals. "The fact is that Hennig's days were numbered anyway. As are Anne's. The operation to discredit Hollis really only looks good if we try to eliminate her, too-as befits someone who betrayed us. And that's especially important now that the French are trying to have her extradited back here to face trial for Hennig's murder. Needless to say, that just can't be allowed to happen. Which is where you come in, Gunther."

"Me?" I shrugged. "Let me get this straight. You're asking me to kill Anne French?"

"Precisely. Except that I'm not asking. The fact is that you agreeing to kill Anne French is a condition of remaining alive yourself."

I estimated once that the Gestapo had employed less than fifty thousand officers to keep an eye on eighty million Germans, but from what I'd read and heard about the GDR, the Stasi employed at least twice that number-to say nothing of their civilian informants or spylets who, rumor had it, amounted to one in ten of the population-to keep an eye on just seventeen million Germans. As deputy head of the Stasi, Erich Mielke was one of the most powerful men in the GDR. And as might have been expected of such a man, he'd already anticipated all my objections to such a distasteful mission as the one he had described and was ready to argue them down with the brute force of one who is used to getting his way with people who are themselves authoritarian and assertive. I had the feeling that Mielke might have grabbed me by the throat or banged my head on the dinner table and, of course, violence was a vital part of his character; as a young communist cadre in Berlin he'd participated in the infamous murder of two uniformed policemen.

Another great Bernie Gunther book...
By Jill Meyer
Okay, first things first. New readers of British author Philip Kerr "Bernie Gunther" series can actually read any of last 9 books in any order they want. (The first three, based in Berlin pre-WW2, should be read first, however). Kerr places Kripo man Gunther in any setting, in any year. You may find a book with Bernie in France in 1956, Cuba in 1951, Munich in 1948, etc. Bernie Gunther is, in general, a down-on-his luck ex-cop, ex SD-man, fleeing from his wartime activities and his post-war hideouts.

In Kerr's newest book, "Prussian Blue", Gunther is placed in 1956 (with flashbacks to the late 1930's) and he is on the run from GDR official Erich Mielke (Kerr often uses real people, mixed in with the fictional), who wants him to commit a murder for him. It's a rather convoluted murder and is associated with the previous novel, "The Other Side of Silence", in the series. (You don't need to have read "Other Side of Silence" to understand this book.) Now, Gunther is no fan of the GDR - the living standards aren't what Bernie is used to and today's Stasi offical is often yesterday's Gestapo bully-boy. Bernie's trying to avoid both.

The book also sets Bernie in April 1939 when he is ordered by Reinhard Heydrich to investigate a possible murder at Hitler's retreat at Berchesgarden. (Curiously, Philip Kerr writes about the use of Pervitin, which was a kind of meth developed by the German pharmaceutical firm Temmler, and widely distributed in Germany to ramp up energy of the military and industrial workers. It was the subject of a new work of non-fiction, "Blitzed", by Norman Ohler)

As the book continues, the two cases as well as some others, come together to make a complete story. As usual, Philip Kerr's plotting is meticulous and brings his readers to another excellent story. And we'll wait for next year's book in the series!

"Trying to be an honest cop in (1939) Germany is like trying to play croquet in no-man's land"
By doc peterson
If you have not read Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels, you are in for a treat: a fomer Kripo Commissar (Berlin's version of Scotland Yard), Bernie Gunther is a reluctant anti-hero: an honest cop who is struggling to maintain is sense of dignity and honor in a time when the Nazis (and later, the Stasi) are in power, corrupting and undermining the very institutions (justice, the pursuit of truth) that mean so much to Gunther. While you can read any of the books in any order, I strongly recommend reading the first three (found here as a trilogy in a single volume Berlin Noir: March Violets; The Pale Criminal; A German Requiem).

In _Prussian Blue_, Gunther is tracked down by a former Kripo cop now working for the Stasi who demands that Gunther travel to London to murder a woman who the East German government sees as a threat. As Gunther attempts to avoid this, her flashes back to April, 1939 when he first met his colleage (who is now a Stasi agent), investigating a murder at Berchtesgarten (the "Eagle's Nest" - Hitler's favorite Bavarian retreat). The flashbacks and flash forwards are typical of Kerr's storytelling in the Gunther novels, and work well in constructing the story. And while the murder investigation in 1939 and the attempts at evasion in 1956 are engaging, its the way in which Kerr writes Gunther that has kept me such a dedicated fan. As the Stasi agent remarks, "I admire you, Bernie. I also can't help but think there's a real danger you've always destined to be your own life's saboteur."

Gunther is a Berliner - blunt, a little "red" (having socialist tendencies is what puts him at odds with the Nazis), and with a biting and pointed sense of humor. Gunther's sarcasm, wit and dry sense of humor not only make him a very real feeling character, they are also elements that endear him to me. I lover Berlin, and I have a soft spot for Berliners - Kerr's descriptions of both are spot on.

I loved the book - and I hope for more by Kerr. If you have not had the opportunity to be introduced to this writer or this series, I enthusiastically recommend them to you.

Great Sense of Place; Bernie Gunther Action; Germany Under Two Systems
By James Ellsworth
In PRUSSIAN BLUE Philip Kerr offers a crackling crisp Bernie Gunther police procedural, again set in NAZI Germany. Kerr also challenges himself to structure a novel where key themes and key images keep recurring. This reinforces Bernie's world-weary nihilism and his suspicion that God and Reality are just playing with mankind, running a series of changes using the same chords. 1936 and 1956 finds Bernie and his battered idealism in similar places, first as the hunter and second as the hunted. As a favored 'outsider' police investigartor for SS General Heydrich, Bernie is sent to ask rude questions of 'untouchable' people in obnoxious ways. Heydrick likes Bernie's tenacity and tolerates his outspokenness and blunt tactics. Twenty years later these same skills bring him unwanted attention from a Communist East German Stasi General who expects Bernie to carry out a political assassination IN LONDON. He is to deliver a brutal death by Thalium contamination. Only the prompt administration of the chemical compound Prussian Blue can stop the action of Thalium. Prussian Blue turns up as a code phrase and so on in the novel. Bernie realizes he must run for his life and that one brutal political system has only been replaced by another. In 1956 he is 'the Fox'; in 1936 he was 'the hounds' but the police process is still the same. Kerr writes both sides of this story equally well.

Kerr offers readers a sense of immersion in Adolf Hitler's idyllic retreat at Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. We are taken inside the construction process and the ruthless acquisition of land from local families to secure the site. Soon we learn of the myriad venal schemes key historical figures close to Hitler are using to generate money for themselves; running from extortion, to selling exemptions from military service, to promoting prostitution to distributing methamphetamine to keep construction workers working extra hours to make the project ready for Hitler's 50th birthday celebration.

Readers who enjoy the Bernie Gunther novels are in for a treat. Readers who are new to the series can wade right into this novel with no sense of having missed anything vital from the earlier novels.

"Nothing short of magnificent."--Library Media Connection

"[A] winsome debut."--New York Times

This beautifully illustrated, fun read-aloud picture book will have kids everywhere asking the same question: "Where, bear?"

Once there was a bear cub who lived with a little boy. But over time the bear cub grew . . . and grew . . . and GREW! And did things that bears do . . . and do . . . and DO! One day the boy looked at the bear and realized he was just too big and bearish to be living in a house. "I think it's time we found you a new place to live where you can be bearish and big," said the boy. "But where, bear?"

From the only two-time World Book Illustrator Sophy Henn, here is a delightful journey that reminds us that even when best friends are apart, they always stay together.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—A cuddly, white cub lives with a little boy in a home in which retro furniture and telephones with cords suggest the mid-20th-century. When the animal's size quickly outpaces the boy's (and the scale of the house), the child sets out to find a new habitat for his friend. The titular question becomes the narrative engine for a series of spreads taking the duo to places ranging from a toy store and zoo to the circus and jungle. Nothing suits the bear, until they arrive at the Arctic. The controlled palette for each spare composition relates to the changing colors of the (mostly solid) backgrounds. The boy's navy shorts and blue-and-white striped shirt are constants as are the white curves of the animal. Their friendship survives the distance, and the bear proposes a new trip together, setting up the boy to ask the question one last time. This pleasant but not distinguished foray into picture books by a British art director is strong on design but a bit short on sustaining narrative interest. With the exception of the circus scene, the bear is a static figure—either sitting or standing—in each new situation. The narrative wears a little thin, with no dramatic tension, action, or climactic rise in the plot or visuals to enliven the repetitive text.—Wendy Lukehart, District of Columbia Public Library

the best book ever this week
By Matthew C. Winner
And the final book, the best book ever this week, is called Where Bear? And it's by Sophy Henn. And this just might be a perfect picture book. Where Bear? stars of boy and his bear, and the boy just continues to ask that reprised, "Where bear?" Where should you go? Where do you want to go as you're growing and growing larger? Where should your home be? And the boy searches all over to find "Is it a zoo? How about if we bring you to a toy shop? What about the jungle?" And no place is right. And so the boy keeps asking, "Well then where, bear?" And finally we find the just right place. But the other thing that works so well is not just the terse language in this book, but also the way that each background in this book is just a solid pastel color, a pastel and gray color. And we just see that boy and the bear, who are basically gray and white, black and white, right up front and right up close. They are the star of our book, and that's where our eyes will go for the entire book. It's a marvel to read. I think you're going to read and just sigh and be thankful that such wonderful books exist in this world. And that's why I'm calling Where Bear? by Sophy Henn the best book ever this week. Way to go!

What do you do with a bear you have outgrown?
By Live Outside
What do you do with a bear when he’s too big for your house? You find him a new house……..but where? In the forest? In the circus? In a toy shop? Or in the zoo? These are questions a boy is pondering as he realizes that his little bear has grown up just like him and he feels that the bear needs room to be “bearish and big.” The duo sets off to find the perfect spot but bear is not satisfied with where the boy takes him. The boy finally comes up with an idea and it works. I think children will enjoy the book as it was a sweet relationship and the illustrations were simple.

By Kylie Burrowes
This book has quickly become my 3 year old son's favorite. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is adorable. We like to come up with reasons why we think Bear doesn't want to live in certain places. I love books that allow children to come up with a little story of their own. He always wants to read this book at least three times in a row. Beautiful work :)

A Great book for the Frasier fan or occasional Chef
By Wayne Beckham
Something that just arrived in the mail is "Cafe' Nervosa: The Connoisseur's Cookbook," an eclectic collection of recipes ostensibly from Frasier, Daphne, and the entire crew. I love to cook and I'm always on the outlook for new recipes and this is a fine collection of some really interesting ones. The picture I've uploaded is one of my favorites, Mocha Nervosa Walnut Bread.

The book is divided into four sections, Man Can Live by Bread Alone (breads and desserts); Let's do Lunch (small, relatively simply meals); Just Bring Two Forks (ornate, you-better-think-about-it meals); and Some Like it Hot (coffees and drinks). Sprinkled throughout the book are quotes and bits from the show. The book also has an index for quick lookup. At 108 pages, it's not a huge book, but well written and just quirky enough to keep your interest. And the recipes are easy enough that almost anyone (that is, me) can do them without getting lost or having to travel to Trader Joe's for some obscure ingredient.
