The magnum opus of a great teacher and scholar

Robert Jewett's commentary on Romans sets a new benchmark for the genre. it provides groundbreaking analysis of the letter using the tools of rhetorical criticism, sociological analysis, and cultural-anthropological analysis in addition to the more traditional approaches of biblical exegesis. Jewett combines sensitivity to theological interpretation (and to its pitfalls) with rigorous commitment to hear the text in its own cultural, social, political, and ideological contexts. As one would expect for any volume in this series, the commentary is thoroughly conversant both with ancient comparative literature and with historic and contemporary scholarship on Romans and on Paul in general. This commentary on Romans is a superb counterpart to Hans Dieter Betz's rhetorical-critical volume on the sister epistle, Galatians, the latter volume representing a landmark pioneering work, the present volume the mature fruition of the discipline of rhetorical criticism.

A new 'New Perspective'

Jewett's commentary on Romans will take its place beside those written by Dunn and Cranfield as absolute must-haves for serious work. His understanding and application of Greco-Roman rhetorical theory does a better job of explaining some of the structural questions surrounding Romans than any other work I've seen. His ancient parallels are eclectic but usually germane to the point under consideration.

One of the reasons I didn't mind investing countless hours reading a 1,000 page commentary on a 7,101 word book was the way he carefully demonstrates exegetical alterations to quoted texts from the Septuagint. That feature alone makes the book worth more than half of its hefty price tag. Indeed, this commentary will become one of the standards for new exegetes just because of how it deals with the rhetorical tradition and how masterfully Jewett explains Paul's use of the Old Testament.

Theologically, his work leaves something to be desired. It is hard to fault a scholar for wanting to see Romans as more than a piece of systematic theology, but it seems to me at times Jewett goes too far in the direction of finding what he perceives as Paul's motivation for writing a situational letter everywhere he looks. His argument that Romans was written to encourage Roman churches to get along so that they could support Paul's mission to Spain is nothing new. But he almost sounds hostile to any kind of dogmatic intent on Paul's part. It's as if Jewett doesn't think that incorrect dogma had anything to do with the internecine strife between churches in the eternal city.

Jewett tries to go behind Augustine's understanding of the righteousness of God as forgiveness and finds that, instead, Paul was concerned to overcome the cultural obsession with gaining honor and avoiding shame among believers at Rome. Although he may have a valid point in some sections of the letter, the endless special pleading on this theme becomes tiresome after about 20 or 30 references to it.

He also has the annoying habit of, on the one hand referring to 'The Father of Jesus Christ' but then referring to God with a feminine pronoun. As an amateur grammarian (theological concerns notwithstanding) that bugged me.

On the whole, though, the bibliography is amazingly complete and up-to-date (especially in German and English). The only thing this commentary is lacking, as far as I can tell, is a little more interaction with patristic exegetes, but at 1,011 pages, you have to leave something out eventually.

This commentary is the new authority on the Letter to the Romans. Jewett's exegesis is outstanding. Controversial in some parts? Yes. But the level of research into the Roman context is outstanding and the bibliography is unprecedented. His introduction is fascinating and explores the Roman way of life in such a way that brings a new dimension to the letter. His voice within the commentary is distinctive as he proceeds with a clear thesis about the letter. Excellent commentary.

About the Author
Sean O'Callaghan was borh in Killavullen, Co Cork in 1918. He was commissioned in the Irish Army in 1936. On leaving the army he baceme a journalist in Fleet St, as well as in Nairobi. He published his first book, The Easter Lily, in 1956, and became a full-time writer. He died as To Hell or Barbados went to press, in August 2000.

Sean O'Callaghan, a former member of the Irish Republican Army, gives an unblinking historical account of the vicious brutality of Cromwell's invasion of Ireland. He also shines a bright light on the British abhorrence of Irish Catholics, citing English pamphlets during the civil war that portrayed Irish Catholics as intellectually and morally inferior. O'Callaghan goes on to detail the systematic, decimation of Irish defenders and the relentless persecution of the innocent others who were transported to Barbados to face forced labor on sugar plantations as slaves. In his description of Irish transport to Barbados, O'Callaghan includes an account that is no less hellish than the horror of the African middle passage. O'Callaghan provides stark accounts of the misery of Irish life on Barbados, describing white slavery and forced labor on sugar plantations. He also gives us a look into the several Irish uprisings in Barbados and the brutality of how the British countered them, employing court-sanctioned torture and executions. O'Callaghan expands his account to include the Irish in Jamaica and America and progresses through emancipation and restoration. He concludes with The Red Legs of Barbados, Irish and Scottish slave descendants and their present-day heirs.

My wife told me about the Irish slaves after she learned about them in a college history class. Being of Irish decent my interest was piqued.
I am amazed that this part of history is not taught in the US school system.

Not the easiest read, though very well written. It is hard due to the reader's emotions in response to the brutality of Irish slavery. Read it because this history must not remain hidden.

I hope you get the same vibes out of this book as I did.

When I was first told about this book I thought it would be just another book about World War II and how a Jew went into hiding to escape Hitler. This book is about a girl named Marisa and how her blonde hair and blue eyes disguises her as a Polish worker. Marisa's family is separated and she is left alone with her cousin Shmuel, who she is in love with. He knows that the only way for Marisa to survive is to get papers from a family friend and take the identity of a Polish girl and work as a servant, to hide her true identity of a Jew. So that is what she does, she goes to Germany to get work and ends up working on a large farm for a Nazi family. The longer she stays on the farm the more confused she gets about her feelings toward this family. She gets very close to the oldest daughter on the farm named Charlotte. Charlotte has a secret and Marisa has to decide to betray her and tell her father about it to protect Charlotte and her own secret or to further endanger herself and Charlotte. Marisa is surprised that Charlotte and the rest of the family treat her like part of the family. Although Marisa kind of loves the Reymanns family she also hates them for some of the things they stand for, like all the insults and their hatred towards Jews, and for basically being Nazi. Can she stand pretending to be someone she's not?

At first I didn't think I would enjoy this book very much, but it shows you different views about how people thought about Jews and Hitler. Like the view of a Jew to the view of a Nazi. Even the view of anti-Hitler groups, they hated Hitler's ideas but they hated Jews too. This book would be enjoyed by mature children and adults. I hope you get the same vibes out of this book as I did.

In hiding.....in your enemy's house.

This book tells what it would be like if you had to hide, in plain sight of your enemy. Marisa, who is Jewish, is fifteen when Nazis invade her city in Poland. Her entire family is killed in a roundup, except for Marisa and a brother and sister. The brother and sister flee into the woods to join the partisans. That is their chance to live. But Marisa's chance is to pose as a Christian girl and work as a servant to a German Nazi. She will have to keep silent, forget who she is, forget everything except that she must not tell the truth, no matter what she does

Absolutely wonderful

This book is a wonderful piece of Holocaust literature. The perspective that it is told from, the eyes of a Polish girl living as a servant in Nazi Germany, is one rarely written about in any teenage Holocaust books. This book is a must read for any teenager interested in the Holocaust, especially interested in the daily life of an Aryan youth. Once again, Carol Matas adds another spectacular addition to the world of teenage Holocaust literature.

About the Author

Raymond Buckland has been actively involved in metaphysics and the occult for fifty years and has writing about it for nearly thirty.

He is the author of more than sixty books, including such best-selling titles as Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft, Gypsy Dream Dictionary, Practical Candleburning Rituals, and Witchcraft from the Inside. Ray has lectured and presented workshops across the United States, and has appeared on major television and radio shows nationally and internationally. He has also written screen plays, been a technical advisor for films, and appeared in films and videos.

Ray comes from an English Romany (Gypsy) family and presently resides, with his wife Tara, on a small farm in central Ohio. Beyond writing, Ray's other passion is homebuilt airplanes.

Practical, sensible, down to earth

Buckland has been writing for a long time. His contributions have been significant but among his many works this one is a gem. I love the vintage packaging - I'm a sucker for a great cover and book design but this book would be of tremendous value even if it came as a bare manuscript. I found his instructions clear, easy to follow and understand. I'm not a "tools" type of person myself but I do use them from time to time and this book added considerably to my appreciation of them. An experienced, seasoned medium may not enjoy the book as much as a novice but I would recommend it to anyone regardless of the person's level of experience because it is a valuable reference work.

A quick little read

This book just touches the surface of Spiritualism and spirit communication. Although there are some good points, the book pretty much seemed stretched out to make it appear like there was more in it. Several of the chapters are more glossaries for dreams and Spiritualism.

There are fact postings throughout in a a large frame. I actually read this book in about an hour and a half. I expected a larger book, but when my copy came in the mail, I was surprised how tiny the actual book is. There's just not much to it.

If it's just a phase of curiosity you're are going through, get the book. But if you want something more in depth about Spiritualism and communication...look elsewhere.

Buckland Does it Again!

Solitary S�ance by Raymond Buckland is a guide to help others communicate with spirits on their own. The various types of communication tools mentioned are just a guide and gives basic information for the main methods used in spirit communication.

Solitary S�ance is a book about communicating with spirits. Buckland doesn't believe that you have to go through a medium to do it, and also shares a little secret - everyone can do this!

Each of the types of communication methods discussed is given a basic bare bones type of an intro but that is all that really needed to be included in this book. If someone tries something and they don't like it or don't find that type of method useful, they can just move on to the next and try it. If they happen to find a few ways to communicate with spirits that they really like, there are plenty of other books available that they could research that specific topic further.

I've read quite a few books that have mentioned all of the methods described in this book with the exception of one. Dominoes. I never knew that it was possible to use Dominoes similar to how Tarot cards are used. Very interesting!

Overall, I found the book to contain quite a good amount of information without going into too much detail in any of the areas. I think that this would be a fantastic book for those who are just starting out in this area to read to help them further their journey into communicating with spirits. If you are like me and have read up on the topic, you may be surprised to find things you didn't know before too. I highly recommend it.

About the Author

Ofer Mendelevitch is Vice President of Data Science at Lendup, where he is responsible for Lendup’s machine learning and advanced analytics group. Prior to joining Lendup, Ofer was Director of Data Science at Hortonworks, where he was responsible for helping Hortonwork’s customers apply Data Science with Hadoop and Spark to big data across various industries including healthcare, finance, retail and others. Casey Stella is a Principal Software Engineer focusing on Data Science at Hortonworks, which provides an open source Hadoop distribution. About the Author
An attorney and Chair of the Law Department at Bentley College, Gerald R. Ferrera's course in cyberlaw was the first to be offered in business schools across the nation. A nationally recognized teacher and author, Professor Ferrera has led Bentley University's effort to develop a national model for a law curriculum that addresses the intersection of business law and information technology. He is the recipient of several teaching honors, including the Gregory H. Adamian Professorship in Law, Charles M. Hewitt Excellence in Teaching Award, Ralph C. Hoeber Award, Bentley Innovation in Teaching Award, and Scholar of the Year. A past president of the North Atlantic Regional Business Law Association and a former editor-in-chief of its Law Review, Professor Ferrera has been published in several legal journals, including the American Journal of Jurisprudence, Pepperdine Law Review, American Business Law Journal, and is the co-author of BUSINESS LAW: TEXT AND CASES and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENTS OF BUSINESS.

A faculty member at Boston College in the Carroll School of Management, Margo E.K. Reder teaches introductory law, as well as electives covering e-Commerce and cyberlaw issues in the M.B.A. and J.D./M.B.A. programs, with an emphasis on entrepreneurial business strategies in the technology sector. Professor Reder was a member of her law school's Law Review, and has published more than twenty law review articles. In addition to teaching, Professor Reder consults with area businesses on technology transfer strategies and outsourcing for U.S. businesses, and serves as a mentor and judge for the students in the business plan competition at Boston College.

Stephen D. Lichtenstein has a B.S. from Boston College, a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School, and a Certificate in Mediation. He has published numerous law review articles on many business law-related topics with a major focus on privacy. Publication awards include two Ralph C. Hoeber awards and the prestigious Bentley College Adamian Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Lichtenstein is past president of the North Atlantic Business Law Association, and currently serves on its executive committee and the board of editors of the Business Law Review. He is a legal consultant to businesses and individuals, and a member of the Massachusetts and Federal Bars.

Robert Bird is Associate Professor of Legal studies and an Ackerman Scholar at the University of Connecticut School of Business. After receiving his J.D. and M.B.A. at Boston University, Professor Bird practiced law in Connecticut and served as a law clerk for the Connecticut Appellate Court, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and the Massachusetts Superior Court. His more than forty articles on employment law, intellectual property law, and strategy have appeared in the American Business Law Journal, Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, Stanford Journal of Law, and others. Professor Bird has lectured at several prestigious universities, and has received multiple awards for his teaching and scholarly research.

Jonathan J. Darrow received his law degree from Duke University, and an M.B.A from Boston College. In 2009, he completed the L.L.M. program at Harvard Law School, where he is currently a candidate for the discipline's highest degree, the S.J.D. Mr. Darrow has practiced corporate law in the Silicon Valley offices of Cooley Godward, and later with Wiley Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C. Formerly, he served as a lecturer at Boston College and Assistant Professor of Business Law at Plymouth State University. His scholarship on intellectual property has appeared in the Stanford Technology Law Review, the NYU Journal of Legislation & Public Policy, the Northwestern Journal of Technology & Intellectual Property, and the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology.

Useful and Interesting

I was required to purchase this as part of a graduate program on cybersecurity. While I choked when I saw the price, I have found it to be both interesting and helpful. The cases which they go over at the beginning are cases that you would typically read during the first year of law school, and are presented to provide fundamental legal concepts, but the book quickly moves to cyberlaw. Some school books, I think you buy and then resell as soon as you are done; this one, I will keep and use as a reference. I like the book a lot, and recommend it with enthusiasm.

I didn't like this book...

This book is written in such a dry manner that it makes learning the material like pulling teeth. What really bugged me was the fact that the questions at the end of each chapter didn't necessarily apply to what you just read. The questions would ask you things the book never even mentioned. Just a very dry, boring book. Must be the reason it's out of print.

Clark Gable, Gladiator, and Cicero

Simon Goldhill has written a splendid and charming book about how ancient Greek and Roman cultures shape our lives, without us even knowing it. Much has been made in recent years of how politicians turn to ancient authorities for guidance and justification in making difficult decisions. Members of the Bush administration, for example, invoked Thucydides and Herodotus during the build up to our attack on Iraq. And, yet, as Goldhill so smartly explains, we need not view the ancients as distant mentors: they live and breathe within us, for better or worse--influencing everything from how we view sex and gender to what entertains us to how our government works. From sex symbols to sporting events, we are impacted by the cultures of our deep past. Amassing a dazzling array of examples, Goldhill is a wonderful synthesizer and storyteller. Highly entertaining, this book is recommended for any general reader, including young adults, interested in ancient history.

Bringing Ancient Greece Alive

A very few authors have the ability to make History live, and in this wonderful book the author achieves this. He demonstates how the teachings and the lives of the ancient Greeks permeate our lives, affecting our sexual mores, politics, social lives, entertainment, and how we feel about love and war, about ourselves and others. Indeed, it is difficult to think of some part of modern living not affected by these ancient people. His writing is replete with interesing examples and stories.

The section on Greek Tragedy is worth the price of the book by itself. Having reread the discussion on the Tragedy of Oedipus several times, I find it both difficult and stimulating, getting me to haul out the old tomes I have from college days, particularly the plays of Sophocles (I have started on "Oedipus the King"}.One of the signs of a good book is that it makes you want to read others on the subject.

I urge you to buy and read this book. You will find it very stimulating and enjoyable and will want to add it to your permanent library.

Democracy, art and love - the Greek was there first!

If you were in doubt before, you wont be after reading this book: The classical Greek and Roman world influences how we look upon almost everything today. So, if we want to understand modern life and our place in it, for real, we must study our Greek and Roman heritage.

Goldhill does a wonderful job of making the connections from the classical world to our world. His insights does indeed help us tackle our often quite confusing contemporary world a little better. Historical knowledge is always useful! Here it is even entertaining! :-)
