About the Author
William Rowlandson is Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Kent, and former co-director, with Angela Voss, of the Centre for the Study of Myth at the University of Kent. He has recently completed a book entitled Borges, Swedenborg and Mysticism, which examines the relationship between Borges' own recorded mystical experiences and his appraisal of Swedenborg and other mystics. William's work on Cuban poet and novelist Jose Lezama Lima concentrated on Lezama's equation of poetry and the numinous. His published articles concern various areas of Latin American studies, including the history of Guantanamo Bay and Gitmo detention centre, rendition, torture, Cuba during the War on Terror. He has also published analyses of Borges, Lezama Lima, Cabrera Infante and Rulfo. Angela Voss was a Lecturer for ten years in the Theology and Religious Studies section at the University of Kent, teaching on the MA in Mysticism and Religious Experience, and directing an MA programme in the Cultural Study of Cosmology and Divination. From January 2014, she will be teaching on a new MA at Canterbury Christ Church University: Myth, Cosmology and the Sacred. Angela is an honorary Lecturer for the MA in the Study of Western Esotericism at the University of Exeter, a tutor in Community Arts and Education at Canterbury Christ Church University, and a practising astrologer and tarot reader. Her research interests centre on the Western esoteric traditions and the symbolic imagination, and she has published extensively on the astrological music therapy of the Renaissance magus Marsilio Ficino.

This book is excellent it will reinforce your study skills!

There are some things in life you should do. One of them is to read, study and apply the techniques outlined in this book. I was normally an average student making average grades. Fortunately, my wife and I took a class in 1989 on "Reading & Study Skills" improvement. This was the text that was used. My grades have improved(A's and B's now)due to this class and this text. It takes work to succeed in any class. This book definately will help you improve your grades in college or high school. I have used it to help teach others how to improve their study skills. You can develop better study habits if you follow the steps in this book.

we read this book for an academic achievement class and it was reasonably interesting. i would recommend it for incoming college first years and those in high school who want to have an edge when they attend college. though i have already been through two years, i look forward to finding out how this book will help.

Pauk's Performance Predominates in this Genre

I have been teaching from Pauk's How to Study in College for many of the last 30 years. Although I have tried other similar textbooks, but none have been as successful with student's as Pauk's. How to Study in College provides solid, time proven strategies that, if used, will help a student fulfill his or her academic goals. The strategy most often used by my college students is Pauk's Cornell Notetaking Method. Included in this textbook are also chapters about listening skills, test-taking strategies, and the power of asking questions. The major change in the seventh edition is a greater emphasis on vocabulary. Beyond revisions in the vocabulary chapter, are two improvements included at the end of each chapter. The first improvement is the addition of an etymology section. One word is highlighted at the end of each chapter, with it's history and current use explained. The second revision is that instead of just listing words in the vocabulary improvement section with three possible synonyms from which a student may choose, words are now being given in context, usually within a quote. The added twist here is that an instructor can discuss the person being quoted, thereby adding historical perspective to students' often too lean knowledge of history. This book is, then, and excellent one for courses that emphasize study strategies and reading comprehension. It is also a textbook that is eminently useable by a student without benefit of an instructor.

For the last few years I've been working on starting up businesses and this is the biggest problem that I've struggled with. We all have a great idea but great ideas don't always make a great product.

His last book gave me a lot to think about and I've been experimenting with works best for me. It's taken a lot of work but I've become much better at finding and recruiting talent.

I've just started reading this book but it's excellent so far. I don't follow many authors but Mike is fantastic and his insight is excellent. Support this author buy his book, I'd love to see more from him. There's so much to learn. :)

Written in haste, it's a quilt of blog posts that's more of a brochure for his courses and books. He cites many other blog posts and authors but only hyperlinks to his own content. It also describes the analytical signal and the Hilbert transform and some of its biomedical applications. New chapters in this edition include one on the analysis of nonlinear biochemical systems and biochemical oscillators, as well as one introducing complex systems and illustrating ways to best model them.

About the Author

Robert B. Northrop graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956. At the University of Connecticut (UCONN), he received a master’s degree in systems engineering in 1958. As the result of a long-standing interest in physiology, he entered a PhD program at UCONN in physiology, doing research on the neuromuscular physiology of molluskan catch muscles. He received his PhD in 1964. His current research interest lies in complex systems. Dr. Northrop was on the electrical and computer engineering faculty at UCONN until his retirement in June 1997. Throughout this time, he was director of the BME graduate program. As emeritus professor, he still teaches courses in BME, writes texts, sails, and travels. He lives in Chaplin, CT, with his wife, and a smooth fox terrier.

Margo Maine, Ph.D., a senior editor of Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, is a clinical psychologist and Director of The Eating Disorders Program at the Institute of Living in Hartford, CT. A lecturer and researcher, she was clinical consultant for the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence winning film, Wasting Away, and is past -president of Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention, Inc.

This explains a lot

Fathers of daughters with eating disorders need help understanding the disorder and how to overcome their frustration with not being able to "fix" their daughter. This book opens the door to begin the process of restoring a more normal and effective role for the father.

While not the most "user friendly" writing style for the non-professional, it is easily understood and offers much information to help men (and the women they love) deal effectively with everyone impacted by the eating disorder...themselves, their spouse and, most importantly, their child.

Although I am a physician, I am also the father of a daughter with an eating disorder and read this book upon the advice of her therapist. I am very glad to say that it has started my daughter and me on a path to a much richer relationship and that she is on the road to recovery.

This book is different from most eating disorder books because of its focus on the father. It really gives you a new perspective on how fathers are actually involved in a daughter's life without actually doing anything. As a recovering anorexic and bulimic, I found this book helpful in opening my mind up about the complex interactions that helped form my problems. Understanding the root of the problem makes solving it easier (but still not that easy)

Disappointment to anyone seeking in-depth analysis

I was hoping this book would take a much more academic, intellectual look at psychoanalysis and the study of father-daughter relationships. Instead, the language and tone are simplistic, the anecdotes are quaint and pleasant, and the overall depth of research seems minimal. It may be a fine place to start as an overview on the topic, but this is definitely not the book to buy if you're searching for anything serious or memorable.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly

Mr Akin might just as well have written apologetics #1 reference book! The only book that could surpass this masterpiece is the ''second volume'' that I pray he starts writing soon. I first heard Mr Akin in the Catholic Answers open forum radio program and I was struck by his clarity of ideas and knowledge of the Christian/Catholic faith. I recommend this book wholeheartedly !!
