About the Author
Kevin Howard Goldberg has been working with computers since 1976 when he taught himself BASIC on his elementary school’s PDP 11/70. Since then, Kevin’s career has included management consulting, lead software development and in his current capacity,� he runs technology operations for a world-class Internet Strategy, Marketing and Development company.

Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and is a candidate for a master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Finally! A GOOD Beginners Guide to XML that Delivers

Truth be told, I do not work as a Web developer, but on a daily basis my job has me in contact with business clients and Web application developers. My clients require robust Web applications, my developers make it happen. Because of legacy data issues, shared disparate databases, and the need for them to handshake; XML Web services have become a standard solution in many commercial Web solutions. Though I am somewhat familiar with the basics of XML I wanted to go deeper to better myself and better my knowledge in client/tech conversations. What I did not want to do is to go so deep as to read a monster 1000+ page tome that would require weeks of book study, application and befuddlement.

Instead, Mr. Goldberg's book provided me a concise break down the structure of XML markup language in a detailed/digestible enough manner to keep me engaged and participatory. Each chapter cleverly builds on previous topics, so as to provide a pyramid learning approach. This enabled me to go deeper than before into the more arcane areas of the language (XPath patterns, functions, expressions, XSL-FO, DTD's, schemas, etc.) so it could be more easily understood.

If you are new to XML, curious, or need enough to know to be dangerous in your job, then this book is for you. BTW, I highly recommend that you download his chapter samples so as to follow along and to tinker with. I read the entire book in a weekend and returned to work on Monday loaded for bear. Now I keep it at my desk for easy reference.

Excellent book on XML

XML: Visual QuickStart Guide (2nd Edition)

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of XML.

I have about an intermediate level of HTML acumen and wanted a book that would cover enough of the rudiments to get a good grasp of the subject. It does that, as well as cover a myriad of related apps such as XPath, XSLT, and XQuery.

I also really appreciated the comprehensible instructions, visual examples, recommended tools, and the applications that give XML its currency in the real world.

All in all, an excellent source.

Good book for beginners.

This is a good book. I would highly recommend that you have some experience with HTML prior to reading it, I hadn't looked into HTML for a while (10 years) and so it was an extremely hypothetical reading. Had I caught up on my HTML first I am certain I would have got even more out of it.

In any case the examples are easy to follow, the author does a great job of breaking things down into nice digestible chunks. If you're looking to take your XML to the next level this is not the book for you, if you are however looking for a solid foundation to build from I would certainly recommend this book without hesitation.

Not Just For Railraoders

I have owned this book for years and it is a staple of the Model railroad community. But all the techniques and tips are perfectly suited for making dioramas for D&D or wargaming or just plain fantasy dioramas. Which is what I do. I have never made a model railraod but I have made many fantasy dioramas - knights, battles, castles etc.

If you are new to making dioramas this book is perfect. It has all the basics on how to do it.

Some nice things about the book:

1. Although most of the pictures are black and white there is a nice color section in the middle so you can see how color works in your landscapes.

2. There is a great product listing in the back of the book that shows you the different scenery building products that Woodland Scenics has.

3. Glossary of terms is a nice addition to the back of the book.

4. nice step by step illustrations on how to build landscapes.

Highly recommended if you want to build dioramas that look realistic. Especially relevant if you are a hobbyist with a few dollars to spend on the Woodland scenics materials. There are lots of tips and tricks for using these materials.

I HAVE USED THIS MANUAL FOR YEARS BUT THE 2007 EDITION IS THE ONE TO GET AS ONLY IT HAS UP-TO-DATE PRODUCT INFO AND ALL PICTURES IN COLOR! OK ONE WAS SEPIA BUT EVEN THE PICTURE SHOWN FOR THIS BOOK IS OF THE OLD MOSTLY BLACK AND WHITE EDITION! THE AMAZON CATALOG PAGE SEEMS TO BE BASED ON THE OLDER EDITIONS ALLOWING SELLERS TO DUMP THE OBSOLETE EARLY EDITIONS ON A UNKNOWING PUBLIC. MAKE SURE OF WHAT YOU ARE BUYING BEFORE GETTING BURNED!

Very Helpful

This book contains months and years of experience in its pages allowing the reader to avoid the months and years of trial and error we all potentially face when landscaping our layouts. Fully illustrated, it also includes subtle tips that assure a professional, museum quality result. I found out recently from a local hobby shop that only about a quarter of the model railroader enthusiasts in America actually attempt a working model railroad. Perhaps it is the anxiety over landscaping? If so this will help.

Excellent little Bible.

Love it. I was very hesitant to order this because it is KJV, a version I struggle to read, but this is the 'Comfort-able KJV' and I have to admit it was easier and reads beautifully. The paper is a bit thin, but that is the price for such a small, portable Bible. The helps and information are awesome. I also bought the full size in the NKJV, and it has become my main Bible. Can't say enough good things about both of them.

This Bible is proof of the existence of God and His Word. I've purchased several of these and found the information in it to be too enlightening to keep for myself. I end up giving them to people who "doubt." The effect of passing along this Bible is astounding. I'm sure I'll be giving this one away as well...seems to be my "job."

Single column text is great. Leather bound binding is awesome! Modern english King James version! I would like paragraph format as opposed to each line a verse though. The formatting could be a bit better but overall this is a great pocket Bible. Highly recommend the leather bound version as opposed to the paperback. The paperback has serious binding issues.

This is a summary derived from between the world and me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I was amazed how the author summarized the story well though it was really short. The story was about how criticism happened in his time and he was explaining it well to his son.

Dominick Salvatore is Distinguished Professor of Economics and Business at Fordham University in New York and Director of the Global Economic Institute. He is Honorary Professor at Shanghai Finance University, Hunan University, University of Pretoria, and LUM (Free University of the Mediterranean). The problems at the end of each chapter are not any better. I could not recommend this book to anybody

I have read my share of text books. My undergrad degree was in engineering, but this book is by far the least explanatory text book that I have ever encountered. The text is really heavy on the definitions and theories. I get it, that stuff is important, but when it comes to applying those things the book just glosses over the details. The problems at the end of each chapter are not any better. I could not recommend this book to anybody. Though it does not matter much since students are not the ones that pick their text books.

it is not to hard of a read and is a fantastic place to start a journey in managerial economics

It was the wrong book for my class. However, I ended up keeping it as the book was just different enough to give me and international perspective on the same issues that we were discussing in this class. It gets four stars because it is written in a way that seems it has all the answers, which no book has. However, it is not to hard of a read and is a fantastic place to start a journey in managerial economics.

This textbook is as disorganised as it is lengthy.

Worst text book I've ever used, even worse than my tax accounting books for Advanced taxation. This book has every single thing you could ever need, but completely fails at explaining or even providing examples of the concepts discussed within the chapters. Tie it with a professor who is inefficient at teaching, it creates a deadly combination.
