Lori: Overcoming Tragedy and Hardship of Misfortune...
By missmickee/bookreview
Many thanks and appreciation to author Charlene Wexler for the signed ARC of her book "Lori" for the purpose of this review. The first noticeable thing about this engaging novel, is that it reads somewhat like a memoir that focuses on the life of Lori, who was particularly challenged to deal with many of life adversities. This is Wexler's forth novel.

The story opens in 1970, when Lori marries into a large Northfield Chicago observant Jewish family. Her husband, Jerry Brill worked with his brother in a family business, and Lori was a teacher. Eventually Lori and Jerry had two children, and the difficulties they faced (after profound loss), were largely related to their troubled marriage and dysfunctional family relationships.
The Brill's disowned Ellen, a lesbian daughter/sister. Jerry's mother Shelly was portrayed as rude, controlling and obnoxious. Jerry was conflicted and torn between loyalty to his mother and his wife, and there was little effort to promote a stronger family unity.
Jerry was a functional alcoholic, and although the depth of his emotions weren't fully explored as Lori's, he was just as scarred by grief and loss. One of the greatest accomplishments of the novel was by their son Barry, who was accepted in med school and became a doctor.
Lori's lifelong best friend Adele remained an anchor and support for her after she had a breakdown, following a tragic loss. When Jerry and Lori relocated to Arizona, Lori developed a new friendship with Rain, who had surprising links to Lori's life in Chicago. Jerry and Lori enjoyed a brief loving renewal of their 30 plus year marriage, with Jerry's newfound sobriety.

Another story highlight was Lori's lack of relationship with her cold, distant, rejecting, mother. After her mother's death, Lori's need for greater understanding of her family dynamic took her on a journey abroad to Germany. There she learned of her family history traced to the Holocaust, which involved persecution by the Nazi's, where members of her family perished at Auschwitz. It was unclear if Lori remained observant of her Jewish faith and heritage. As she reached a level of acceptance, Lori moved forward with her life, and rose above the hardship, dysfunction, and misfortune. I couldn't help but wonder just how many bad things could happen to one person.

Charlene Wexler is an award winning novelist, her short stories and essays have appeared in a variety of publications in the US and Great Britain. She lives with her husband in the area of Chicago, Illinois.

A great family saga
By Bill B.
When the genre is family saga, books don't come better than Charlene Wexler's Lori. It's not only the story of a woman who gets stronger and stronger the more adversity she faces, but it takes the reader through the sweeping societal and social changes of the last quarter of the 20th Century. In this way, Lori is a smart, sharp version of Forrest Gump--changes in society are looked at through the lens of her life. Lori also is a female "buddy" book, as the book explores her relationship with her lifelong best friend, Adele, and with a latter-day wild child, Rain. Lori deals with the clash of family cultures, money problems, illness, death, alcoholism, the threat of prison, and even features a twist concerning the Holocaust. But far from a downer, this book is the story of a woman's triumph over adversity. You just don't want to put it down, because you constantly can't believe what happens next. This is a great book for young women to get a taste of what life holds and how to overcome adversity, and for more senior women who can compare Lori's struggles to those of their own lives. This book would make a great miniseries or movie. Charlene Wexler already is an award-winning author, and she's got another triumph in Lori.

WHOPPING FULL-SIZED 20TH CENTURY JOURNEY
By Leigh Podgorski
LORI by Charlene Wexler is a whopping full-sized read, a journey through not only the 20th Century, but also through one woman’s life as she tries to navigate the turbulent waters of a time of great change for women in America. Add to the tumult an alcoholic husband, a daughter courageously fighting a serious illness, and a hidden connection to the Holocaust that unlocks the central mystery of Lori’s life, and you begin to understand the scope of Charlene Wexler’s undertaking.
Lori comes from privilege—that is the privilege of money, but never has she known the true comfort of love and acceptance; her life especially having lacked the warmth of a mother’s love. This has impacted all her days and colored her world—in ways Lori knows and will discover along her journey. Her biggest saving grace from childhood is best friend Adele, a life-long friendship, who later on, with husband Jim forms part of the foursome Lori spends a great deal of her married life with along with husband Jerry. Is it the very power of this friendship that keeps her with her alcoholic husband long past the time she should have stayed? Or is it her own naivet? An inability or refusal to look deeper and “disturb her universe”? These are all questions Lori must face as she travels her uncomfortable journey—a journey that eventually leads her to Rain, another “helper” and another powerful friend, quite opposite to Adele, and one that spurs Lori on to further discovery.
The illness of Lori’s daughter Julie and the impact this has on the family and especially on Lori supplies some of the most evocative and most beautiful writing in the novel. In these sections, the prose flows, sweeping the reader along in these heart-rending passages, making us fervently hope and want it not to be so. But this is life, wondrously rendered.
But Lori continues. She always continues, ungainly, perhaps, even inelegantly, but she moves on. Which is, perhaps, the greatest lesson and triumph of the novel.
Charlene Wexler is an award winning author, and you will find much to cheer in LORI.
