Eat Sleep Sit: My Year at Japan's Most Rigorous Zen Temple, by Kaoru Nonomura

At the age of thirty, Kaoru Nonomura left his family, his girlfriend, and his job as a designer in Tokyo to undertake a year of ascetic training at Eiheiji, one of the most rigorous Zen training temples in Japan. This book is Nonomura's recollection of his experiences. He skillfully describes every aspect of training, including how to meditate, how to eat, how to wash, even how to use the toilet, in a way that is easy to understand no matter how familiar a reader is with Zen Buddhism. This first-person account also describes Nonomura's struggles in the face of beatings, hunger, exhaustion, fear, and loneliness, the comfort he draws from his friendships with the other trainees, and his quiet determination to give his life spiritual meaning.

After writing Eat Sleep Sit, Kaoru Nonomura returned to his normal life as a designer, but his book has maintained its popularity in Japan, selling more than 100,000 copies since its first printing in 1996. Beautifully written, and offering fascinating insight into a culture of hardships that few people could endure, this is a deeply personal story that will appeal to all those with an interest in Zen Buddhism, as well as to anyone seeking spiritual growth.

Review

"It is difficult to adequately praise this book. To begin with, Kaoru Nonomura is a great writer. The description of his experiences Is precise, detailed and unsparingly honest, yet giving sudden glimpses of the heart and soul of a poet and mystic. The translation is superb. The story is riveting. . . . a treasure for anyone on any spiritual path."- Light of Consciousness

Here is an unusually fine translation of a most unusual best-seller. . . We sometimes have the odd idea that Zen means simply sitting around until satori happens. . . . It is much more, as novice Nonomura discovered when he joined the beginners at Eijeiji, one of the most rigorous temples in Japan. . . . a boot camp of a place that would make even brave marines quail. . . .Nonumura stood the strain. He stayed a year. . . . This painful route, then, is the true Zen path. . . . Almost as painful must have been the translation of this book with its extraordinary width of styles from the arcane Zen tracts of Dogen and others, to the diary-like grumbles of the clueless young Nonomura. Here, translator Juliet Carpenter not only stays the course, she defines it .here is a particularly felicitous translation, especially in the handling of the colloquial within the religious context. DONALD RICHIE, in The Japan Times

About the Author

Born in 1959, Kaoru Nonomura traveled widely in Asia as a university student, and upon graduation began to work as a designer in Tokyo. At the age of thirty, he decided to put his career on hold to spend a year as a trainee monk at Eiheiji, a monastery famed for its rigid discipline. Twelve months later, he returned to his design job, and it was during his daily commute on a crowded train that he began to jot down his recollections of his Eiheiji experience. These notes eventually became Eat Sleep Sit, the author's only book.

A Year of Asceticism at Eiheji
By Robin Friedman
This book offers a view of Zen Buddhist practice that will come as a surprise to many Americans with an interest in Buddhism. The book tells of the rigorous, harsh, and all-consuming training that young male recruits undergo at Eiheji. Located in the mountains in a remote area of Japan, Eiheji Monastery was founded by Dogen (1200 -1253) in 1244. A Buddhist monk, Dogen travelled to China and brought back to Japan what became known as the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. Eiheji remains the head temple of Soto Zen. It trains priests who serve in Zen temples throughout Japan.

In this memoir, Kaoru Nonomura describes the year he spent in training at Eiheji. As a young man of 30, Nonomura was a university graduate who had travelled throughout Asia and had a good job as a designer. He lived with his parents. Nonomura is vague about what led him to abandon his life for the rigors on training as a monk. He writes "I'd grown weary of my life, had come to feel the entanglements of society so burdensome and disagreable that I'd resolved to flee them by becoming a Zen Buddhist Monk --and yet now that society's hold on me was slipping. I felt increasingly sad and sentimental." (p.13) Nonomura bids a short farewell to his parents and his girlfriend and sets out for Eiheji.

Nonomura's book details the harsh, rigorous training to which he had subjected himself at Eiheji. Designed to strip the recruits of their egos and concepts of self, the training subjected Nonomura, who as a monk received the name of Rosan, to beatings, kicks, and abuse, to long days beginning at 1:30 a.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m., to extensive periods of sitting in the painful full lotus position, to endless chores and studies of Zen texts, and to rigorous procedures covering every aspect of the day from eating, walking, and sleeping, to folding one's clothes, washing one's face, and going to the toilet.

Rosan and his fellow trainees were understandably overwhelmed. In the book, we follow the training year from its beginning in January with the initial seven day orientation period through the end of the year and the beginning of a new cycle the following January. Gradually, almost imperceptibly, Rosan's attitude towards his training changes. Rosan moves from a focus on the training's brutality and hardship to a realization of the value of the course he had, without fully realizing it, chosen for himself. Nonomura writes:

"[W]hy, in order to remove the ego, is it necessary to sit with legs folded, facing the wall? Why this form and no other? I doubt whether anyone could put the answer into words. Only in sitting for oneself, and persisting in sitting to the very end, does the answer come welling up in one's blood and bones. .... Devoting oneself to sitting, getting used to sitting, and conquering the pain of sitting are all equally pointless. The only point of sitting is to accept unconditionally each moment as it occurs. This is the lesson of 'just sitting' that I had absorbed after one year." (pp. 291-92)

Besides focusing on the training, the recruits, and the heirarchy at Eiheji, Nonomura's book quotes liberally from the works of Dogen, particularly from the "Treasury of the True Dharma Eye." This is a collection of 95 essays Dogen wrote between 1231 and 1253 which detail his Zen practice. Dogen's teachings were followed closely at Eiheji. His book was studied extensively by the trainees in learning their practice. The book also quotes extensively from Buddhist sutras and other texts which illuminate Eiheji monastery and its ideals. Early in their training, a senior monk presses upon the new recruits the significance of the words written on the main gate to the monastery, composed in 1820 by the abbot at the time:

"The tradition here is strict: no one however wealthy, important or wise may enter through this gate who is not wholehearted in the pursuit of truth."

"The gate has no door or chain, but is always open, any person of true faith can walk through it at any time." (p. 33)

During his year of training, Rosan gains insight into the significance of these inscriptions.

The book ends with Rosan's decision to leave the monastery after the year and to return to his former life. In two postscripts to Japanese editions of this book, the author reflects further on the factors which led him to enter Eiheji and on the course of his life following his year in the monastery. (Nomura spent 1989-90 at Eiheji. His book first appeared in Japan in 1996, with the Japanese paperback edition appearing five years later. Nomura wrote the book largely while communiting to and from his work.)

The harshness and difficulty of training at Eiheji, with its almost militaristic trappings, differs markedly from the softer forms of Buddhism often portrayed and practiced in the United States. Although I have some background knowledge, I found myself not entirely prepared for the severity portrayed in this book. This is a compelling, thoughtful memoir. For all its rigor, this book helped me see Buddhist teachings in a way I hadn't seen them before.

A Year Long Exercise in Austerity
By Brian Whistler
This is not an easy read. The author, experiencing an early midlife crisis goes off to the toughest Zen monastery in Japan for a year. Like the subject, the writing is austere and deliberately lean. Pages, indeed whole chapters are devoted to the description of how a monk should brush his teeth or conduct himself during a meal. This is spiritual boot camp and I can tell you, I wouldn't last a week in such an environment. The author is subjected to emotional torment and even beating as he bumbles his way through the labyrinth of arcane rules and regulations, memorizing prayers and rituals that include the striking of various drums, bells and gongs in an exact order and timing throughout the day. Everything is regulated and deliberately uncomfortable. Rigorous does not begin to describe the life these men must endure. Everything from the way they wear their robes and wash their faces is proscribed down to the finest detail.

Does the author learn something in his year at Eiheiji? Its hard to say. On reflection, he says he thinks twice about killing an insect. He no longer eats more than necessary. He has become capable of tears. All good and useful things. He does seem to come away with an appreciation for the preciousness of each moment. This is golden wisdom. Still, I couldn't help but wonder what the Buddha himself would've thought of this extreme training designed to strip a person of his ego but in such a brutal way. Would the Awakened One see this as faithful to the Middle Way he espoused?

This book maddened me, frustrated me and several times I grew impatient with it. How could this calculated and systematic breaking down of a man actually lead to freedom? They say there are many paths to the top of the mountain. I suppose this is one, but if so it is for a very select few.

This book ,like monastic life, is not for everyone. In the end, a worthwhile read for some, though to tell the truth, in my impatience I skipped some of the detailed accounts of cleaning the bathrooms and washing one's face: clearly I would never have made it at Eiheiji!

This is not your father's Zen
By Eric San Juan
Kaoru Nonomura decided to throw away his normal life and for a time live in one of the most rigorous, harrowing Zen temples in Japan. Why did he do this? For the experience, we presume. His motivation was not altogether clear.

And what an experience it was. As he chronicles in Eat Sleep Sit, he endured brutal training, harsh discipline, and an altogether uncomfortable way of living on his way to reaching enlightenment.

But don't expect a philosophical book. This book does not wax philosophical, it chronicles what seems like the mundane -- doing chores, washing floors, maintaining a strict daily routine -- in outlining what Nonomura endured. Oh, and the physical punishment. A LOT of physical punishment. Getting slugged for not sitting properly is the norm here.

Yet Nonomura not only endured it, he found that the experience enriched his life and view of the world.

Western folks in love with the idea of Zen Buddhism too often romanticize it, not fully understanding what it means to devote your life to the practice. This dose of reality is eye-opening, fascinating, and absolutely necessary.

Sparsely and simply written (and translated from Japanese), Eat Sleep Sit is easy to absorb for even the most casual of readers, yet the simple presentation saps none of its power. Recommended.

Beautifully translated classic literature
By Amazon Customer
I've loved this book since I was a child, and when I learned Esperanto I bought this translation. I can't speak to this printing, I bought an earlier printing of this, and La Regxo de la Ringoj (Lord of the Rings) long before Amazon U.S. ever started carrying Esperanto titles. This was translated by an all-star cast of translators in the Esperanto Community. I've read it cover to cover more than once, and I have enjoyed it very much everytime I have done so.

Ireland in the Medieval World AD 400-1000: Landscape, kingship and religion, by Edel Bhreathnach

This is a study of Ireland's people, landscape, and place in the world from late antiquity to the reign of Brian Borama. The book narrates the story of Ireland's emergence into history, using anthropological, archaeological, historical, and literary evidence. The subjects covered include the king, the kingdom and the royal household, religion and customs, free and unfree classes in society, exiles, and foreigners. The rural, urban, ecclesiastical, ceremonial, and mythological landscapes of early medieval Ireland anchor the history of early Irish society in the rich tapestry of archaeological sites, monuments, and place-names that have survived to the present day. A historiography of medieval Irish studies presents the commentaries of a variety of scholars, from the 17th-century Franciscan Micheal O Cleirigh to Eoin Mac Neill, the founding father of modern scholarship. *** "Bhreathnach draws on archaeological evidence to supply insights into a society that has left only oblique views in the written record, proposing a revised view of the place of Ireland in medieval Europe....the book features eight pages of color plates and many photos, and is a must for academic libraries, particularly those with extensive history or archaeology collections. Essential." - Choice, Vol. 52, No. 4, December 2014 *** Featured in 'Outstanding Academic Titles', a prestigious list of publications for the year 2014. - Choice, January 2015 [Subject: History, Medieval Studies, Archaeology, Anthropology, Irish Studies, Religious Studies]

Less history than expected; more opinion & how-to-study.
By onefield
This book is very readable and can be used as a starting point for someone wishing to get deeper into Irish history. The author cites many useful sources and incorporates quotes translated from primary sources into points on social history and context. The approach seems a bit too general, at times; the author includes explanations of the behavior of other cultures (such as the Romans) and extrapolates from those to cover Irish contexts which may or may not be similar. The author also focuses a bit much on HOW to study the sociology of historical people, when it might be more efficient and useful to the reader to focus instead on the historical facts of Ireland. After the landscape section, the book became less specific about the history of this unique culture and turned more into an intro to history as an intellectual study, with examples from Ireland worked in. I also found that the author has some rather strong, unnecessary opinions thrown into the work, which were off-putting and did not contribute to the understanding of Irish history (for example, the author wholeheartedly endorses the historicity of "The Life of Patrick," but disparages a few other very similar hagiographies and outright dismisses the possibility of Ailbe existing at all, without citing a source or support for this preference; earlier, the author spends a whole section discussing how the Irish never formed Roman-type cities, but suggesting that the definition of city is inadequate and perhaps not useful to the study of Ireland). It also would have been nice to see more analysis of the social context of Ireland in a chronological order, following settlement trends and religious/literary changes in a more coherent, logical rhythm instead of bouncing from topic to topic.

On the whole, this is a great starter book for someone new to reading history and wishing to learn more about the medieval Irish. It is definitely geared to help with learning how to study historical sociology, and the author shows some bias, but the extensive bibliography alone makes this a worthwhile purchase. There are some neat photos of excavated settlements and a great discussion of Ogham markers on property boundaries. Don't expect this to be the full explanation of Ireland in the early Medieval Era, though; this is not really a history textbook, but rather a discussion of *how* to think about Irish history.

Global Capitalism: Its Fall and Rise in the Twentieth Century, by Jeffry A. Frieden

"Magisterial history...one of the most comprehensive histories of modern capitalism yet written." ―Michael Hirsh, New York Times Book Review

In 1900 international trade reached unprecedented levels and the world's economies were more open to one another than ever before. Then as now, many people considered globalization to be inevitable and irreversible. Yet the entire edifice collapsed in a few months in 1914.

Globalization is a choice, not a fact. It is a result of policy decisions and the politics that shape them. Jeffry A. Frieden's insightful history explores the golden age of globalization during the early years of the century, its swift collapse in the crises of 1914-45, the divisions of the Cold War world, and the turn again toward global integration at the end of the century. His history is full of character and event, as entertaining as it is enlightening.

From Booklist
Frieden, an academic, traces the history of globalization from the late 1800s to the present, telling us, "Global economy and culture form a nearly seamless web in which the national boundaries are increasingly irrelevant to trade, investment, finance and other economic activity." Globalization is a choice formed by politics and policy decisions. It is now considered the norm, a fact of life that will continue. However, the author points out that this was also true from the end of the 1800s to 1914 and the start of World War I. The foundations of preexisting global economic order disintegrated, reemerging in the 1970s but not thriving until the 1990s. International integration usually expands economic opportunities and benefits society, but global capitalism, which does not address those ill-treated by world markets (e.g., the unemployed, the poor, children and the elderly), has driven societies toward conflict and class warfare. This is an excellent, readable history of globalization with important lessons for our society today. Mary Whaley

This is an excellent, readable history of globalization with important lessons for our society. "

An economic history of the twentieth century that makes the whole thing come alive. --David Warsh"

Broad and ambitious in its sweep.... One lesson with enormous contemporary resonance emerges: globalization is neither inevitable nor irreversible. Governments can choose to retreat into isolation and have often done so. --Alan Beattie"

Globalization 2.0
By Izaak VanGaalen
Jeffrey Frieden, a Harvard professor specializing in international trade and finance, has written a masterly and comprehensive history of capitalism from 1870 to the present. His history of globalization reminds us that it is not a recent develpment and that its current success is not guaranteed.

The first era of globalization (1870 to 1914) had many of the same characteristics as today's. There was an unprecedented cross-border movement of goods, capital, and labor. (Labor more so in the first era.) During these years huge amounts of capital moved overseas to America, Canada, and Argentina mainly due to the reduced costs of communication and transportation. The technologies driving this globalization were the telegraph and railroads. It was also facilitated by the fact that most currencies were convertible to gold. The investment in the Americas was also followed by a huge immigrant population. In these years, America, Canada, and Argentina had much larger immmigrant populations at the turn of the 20th century than today.

The main thing that distinguishes the present globalization from the first is what happened in between. After the Great Depression and World War II remedies were put into place to mitigate the damaging effects of these economic and social catastrophes. Social benefits such as unions, minimum wage, healthcare and pensions were established as safety nets. In the era between the two globalizations when economies were mostly national the safety nets were part of the social contract between capital and labor.

In 1980, when our current era of globalization begins, capital began to move overseas again in order to find countries with lower labor and social costs. This time, however, labor did not follow. The industrialized countries now have large middle classes with social benefits promised who are not certain about how they are going to be paid. This is causing many in the industrialized world to have second thoughts about our current phase of globalization.

Frieden has a guarded optimism about global capitalism and thinks it is still the best system for distributing wealth. Yet, his last chapter "Global Capitalism Troubled" points to some more clouds on the horizon. There seems to be a growing gap between those who control capital and those who work for a living. People understand that globalization is inevitable but they want a new set of rules to address the growing inequalities.

Frieden is a cheerleader for a more equitable capitalism that can deliver both social benefits and robust economic growth.

Almost tempted to give it a miss
By Philip Sim
I was almost tempted to give the book a miss after seeing the high ratings that were given by reviewers that seemed to be anti-globalizationists (what an awkward term!)

However, I came across the book at my library and gave it a chance, and I was not disappointed. It is a book that does a creditable job of summing up the ups and downs of the world economy over the past hundred years and more. And it also does a fairly good job of raising some issues and problems with the world economic system, and how the system had evolved to meet those issues and problems. On the whole, I think it's a balanced book, pointing out the critical need for free and integrated markets to raising millions in the world out of poverty, as well as some of the problems facing them.

The only reason why I gave the book a four rather than a five is that it is not an easy read, and it is best read with some thought and analysis on the reader's part. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not something for everyone.

By the way, do ignore those reviews that pretend to tell you what the author was saying in his book. I'm not sure that he's actually saying what they say he is saying.

Read the book for yourself. It's worth the time and effort.

winners and losers, a scorecard
By Linksman
Although he begins slowly and tempts one to cast the book aside prematurely, Professor Frieden ultimately provides a useful play by play account of global trade and money flows over the past one hundred odd years. Whether or not he intended to prove as much, his chronicle demonstrates that absent sound political leadership, the result within ANY COUNTRY is an enlarged volume of tradeable goods, a small financial elite, a bewildered and increasingly indebted and disenfranchised population which must mobilize into political constituencies to battle for scraps. This was true under the classical gold standard, and it remains true under the regime of floating exchange rates. It was less true during the Bretton Woods regime (1946 to 1973), largely because speculative financial flows were restricted by exchange controls.

The strength of the book is that it mentions every event of consequence, most of them in passing. A reader can sense the inevitable buildup of economic and political pressures, and watch them explode one by one. That America allows itself to be drawn into the morass, time after time, is testament to the linguistic capabilities of our well heeled charlatans, toadying academics and ignoramus politicians, who always manage to capture the public forum, and who continue to retain it even after the latest disaster which ought to have made even them consider reality just this once. Don't hold your breath. For those for whom globalization pays it pays really well. Until the rest of us digest the lessons of books like this one, the music can be expected to continue as more and more chairs are drawn away.

Professor Frieden displays respectable academic virtues and remains even handed toward the concerns of both rich and poor. You won't get a radical suggestion out of him. It is tempting to suggest that America should turn its back on the global economy, and put its population to work here at home making what we need. It is more tempting to suggest that the beneficiaries of global money flows should be taxed progressively (and then some), that banks should be returned to productive lending and broken into manageable pieces, that large corporations should be progressively taxed on their capitalizations rather than on what they choose to report as earnings, and that land should be taxed at its unimproved value instead of under the conventional method which endlessly rewards those whose ancestors grabbed it first (and a succession of buccaneer tycoons shrewd enough to bamboozle the bankers who allow them one way options to step into inheritor shoes). All of these gestures would help and none of them is likely to be tried, at least until things become dramatically worse. The only certainty is that our present course is not going to work, but at least many of us will have plenty of time to become experts in economic history. They say it helps to understand why one is being $crewed.

like the original Alter EGO series
By A student
As with the other Alter EGO + books, it's a big improvement on the earlier edition. The Alter EGO + series, like the original Alter EGO series, is designed to be used with an instructor, not for self-teaching. That said, there is better support for independent learning and practice in the newer books. Anyone using Alter EGO + levels 1 and 2 should be forewarned that there is no Parcours Digital to accompany this text--an unfortunate decision by the authors, in my opinion.

Good, but could be better
By Russell Gallagher
This is a pretty good book for learning French but there are two main drawbacks to this book. The main drawback is that it doesn't come with an answer key. It does have the transcriptions to the recordings on the CD it comes with but no answer key. The other drawback is that it covers grammar too lightly. That might not be a bad thing for some but for me it is. On the other hand, this book is full of really good content and it is all in French. So, if those drawbacks don't bother you then I would say that this would be a very good book for you as you learn French.
