Ireland in the Medieval World AD 400-1000: Landscape, kingship and religion, by Edel Bhreathnach

This is a study of Ireland's people, landscape, and place in the world from late antiquity to the reign of Brian Borama. The book narrates the story of Ireland's emergence into history, using anthropological, archaeological, historical, and literary evidence. The subjects covered include the king, the kingdom and the royal household, religion and customs, free and unfree classes in society, exiles, and foreigners. The rural, urban, ecclesiastical, ceremonial, and mythological landscapes of early medieval Ireland anchor the history of early Irish society in the rich tapestry of archaeological sites, monuments, and place-names that have survived to the present day. A historiography of medieval Irish studies presents the commentaries of a variety of scholars, from the 17th-century Franciscan Micheal O Cleirigh to Eoin Mac Neill, the founding father of modern scholarship. *** "Bhreathnach draws on archaeological evidence to supply insights into a society that has left only oblique views in the written record, proposing a revised view of the place of Ireland in medieval Europe....the book features eight pages of color plates and many photos, and is a must for academic libraries, particularly those with extensive history or archaeology collections. Essential." - Choice, Vol. 52, No. 4, December 2014 *** Featured in 'Outstanding Academic Titles', a prestigious list of publications for the year 2014. - Choice, January 2015 [Subject: History, Medieval Studies, Archaeology, Anthropology, Irish Studies, Religious Studies]

Less history than expected; more opinion & how-to-study.

This book is very readable and can be used as a starting point for someone wishing to get deeper into Irish history. The author cites many useful sources and incorporates quotes translated from primary sources into points on social history and context. The approach seems a bit too general, at times; the author includes explanations of the behavior of other cultures (such as the Romans) and extrapolates from those to cover Irish contexts which may or may not be similar. The author also focuses a bit much on HOW to study the sociology of historical people, when it might be more efficient and useful to the reader to focus instead on the historical facts of Ireland. After the landscape section, the book became less specific about the history of this unique culture and turned more into an intro to history as an intellectual study, with examples from Ireland worked in. I also found that the author has some rather strong, unnecessary opinions thrown into the work, which were off-putting and did not contribute to the understanding of Irish history (for example, the author wholeheartedly endorses the historicity of "The Life of Patrick," but disparages a few other very similar hagiographies and outright dismisses the possibility of Ailbe existing at all, without citing a source or support for this preference; earlier, the author spends a whole section discussing how the Irish never formed Roman-type cities, but suggesting that the definition of city is inadequate and perhaps not useful to the study of Ireland). It also would have been nice to see more analysis of the social context of Ireland in a chronological order, following settlement trends and religious/literary changes in a more coherent, logical rhythm instead of bouncing from topic to topic.

On the whole, this is a great starter book for someone new to reading history and wishing to learn more about the medieval Irish. It is definitely geared to help with learning how to study historical sociology, and the author shows some bias, but the extensive bibliography alone makes this a worthwhile purchase. There are some neat photos of excavated settlements and a great discussion of Ogham markers on property boundaries. Don't expect this to be the full explanation of Ireland in the early Medieval Era, though; this is not really a history textbook, but rather a discussion of *how* to think about Irish history.
