Get back to the basics!

New or old, Christians tend to think they must out-do, over-perform, out-tithe, out-memorize, over-volunteer the next Christian in order to prove how faithful they are. That's not what faith or Christianity is about! This book gets you back to the basics, back to the Sermon on the Mount, back to what Jesus said... not what the neighbor's said. If you're feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or scared of the Christian faith, this is a wonderful book because it tells you what is the basics, what is required, what is called for by Jesus, so you can either leave the rest behind, or understand that you're doing it to (and for) yourself.

Based on the Sermon on the Mount

Chuck Swindoll has a gift for being able to present the tough truths of scripture in an accessible way. Sometimes, his rush to be relevant causes him to go awry from what the text is saying (You can really see this in his book "Laugh Again," a (very) loose exposition of Philippians.
But Pastor Swindoll is in fine form in this marvelous series on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). He does a good job of expounding the biblical text and applying it to today's issues. I liked how he compared Jesus' teachings on anger and adultery with what Jesus says later in the Gospel of Matthew. He also does a good job of transitioning from one section of scripture to the next. For example, he shows how his desire for us to keep our marriage vows (Matt 5:31-32) moves into the discussion of keeping our other vows and not swearing at all (Matthew 5:33-37).
I'm not sure that the title of the book is a good encapsulation of the Sermon on the Mount. A more apropo title might have been "Kingdom Living Here and Now." (On the other hand, didn't John MacArthur use this title already?)
This book isn't quite as good as John Stott's "Message on the Sermon on the Mount," but it's up there, and a preacher will want to have it in his library.
