John Perry lives in Vermont with his wife Barbara. He owns and operates a hologram production company, and teaches at the University of Vermont. Dr. Perry holds a PhD. in astrophysics.

Enjoyable Read - a fresh mystery

I am not much of a mystery reader, but I really enjoyed this book. History shapes us, and Perry demonstrates this superbly in "Partner in Survival". In one second, a family tragedy from years ago turns into a full-fledged mystery, leaving the characters involved to question not only their past, but their present as well. This novel offers unique characters that I, as the reader, was able to relate to, while at times questioning their sanity.
The writing is wonderful. The author effortlessly weaves in multiple elements to provide interest in more than just the mystery that lives within the plot. Humor, science, sarcasm and sadness all play a part. I found myself smiling during scenes where you'd think any levity would be hard to find, and at times felt deep sadness for the main character Timmy, despite his seemingly lack of self-pity. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope there will be more to follow.

This is not your ordinary mystery: no one is murdered, though someone has died. Nor does the book elicit the usual response to the word "survival": no one is rescued from a deep crevice or is about to starve. Instead the mystery largely takes place within the mind of the narrator, who, in a meandering, intense journey seeks answers to his mothers' mysterious, tormented past, and to the complicated, often lonely childhood he shared with his sister. Each sibling has found solace and accomplishment in different ways: the narrator as a successful astrophysicist; his sister Claire as a new age prophet. When Claire thinks she has seen their mother on a street in her home town in Maine, the search begins (and never ends). Brilliant, analytic passages are interspersed with descriptions of the cruelty and indifference of the psychiatric community that failed to protect a well loved but troubled mother and in consequence, her two young children.

More instructive and unforgettable than a mystery

I happened upon Partner in Survival when searching for something of similar title and am most thankful that I did. It's a highly original page-turner which will likely find, and definitely deserve, commercial publication and a wide reading audience.
The author proves himself to be a highly reflective middle-aged University of Vermont astrophysicist, well-versed in the ways of logic and skepticism. He and his highly intuitive and very different sister, his "partner in survival," find themselves joining forces after she thinks that she has sighted their mother on a street in Lewiston, Maine, some thirty years after her presumed suicide.
The denouement is gradually and satisfyingly revealed, but not before we have learned much about the author's academic discipline, his sister's holistic lifestyle with her family in Maine, and life growing up in the Cambridge of the 1950s, more comfortable in its academic than its social norms.
More than The Suicide Index or any sociological text with which I am familiar, this book, intentionally or not, will never let the reader forget that in the taking of one's life, one takes much of many others.
